Kai was waiting outside our residence building as Magda and I walked home. Lilah had spotted him from far enough away that she could branch off from us before she was socially obligated to say anything to him.
As we approached, I couldnât help but analyze Kaiâs smile and posture, looking for any hidden signs that he was too nice. I didnât see anything unusual, and I forced myself to put the whole conversation out of my head.
They were just used to my dating Lucas, I told myself. The change was difficult for me, and it might have also felt sudden for our little friend group. If I were Magda or Lilah, I probably would have been rooting against Kai, too. Especially after I saw the state that Lucas was in.
I couldnât assume that his condition was entirely about me, but nevertheless, I felt partially responsible. At the very least, I wasnât there to help him when he needed me, even though he was there for me without question.
Kai kissed me, then wrapped his arm around my shoulders and smiled at Magda. âHey, Mags.â
I could see what Magda had been talking about, when she said that he was too nice. No one called her Mags. Magda was already her nickname, and she never introduced herself as anything but that or her full name, Magdalena. It would be clear to anyone who knew her that calling her Mags was rubbing her the wrong way.
I decided Iâd have to tell Kai not to call her that later, but bringing it up in the moment would probably cause more harm than good. She gave Kai a quick smile before walking past us and into the residence hall.
âWhatâs up with her today?â Kai asked.
âOh, sheâs not feeling well,â I said. âSo, what do you have planned for us?â
âI was thinking we could go for a stroll out in the forest again,â Kai said, already starting to walk.
He was probably only suggesting it because I had liked going to the creek so much the last time, but I was concerned that it would be too difficult for me to control my powers once I got into the forest. I couldnât remember the last time I was able to practice demon magic outside of one of the lessons Linden gave me through my dreams. I could feel my volatile powers around me like a static charge, waiting for me to make one wrong move.
I imagined trying to run away from shadow demons with Kai trailing behind me. If something like that happened, how would I explain it to him? The only way I could protect myself from demons was through using demon magic, and once Kai saw it, there was no going back.
Not to mention that if his plan was to use magic in the forest, even for something as simple as racing leaf boats across the creek, it could cause major problems for me. With the way I was feeling, I wouldnât be surprised if I accidentally summoned an entire oak tree from the Underworld.
