Chapter Nineteen

Vivian

I’d suddenly developed a case of attention deficit disorder as I sat in my Corporate Law lecture doodling daisies and then counting the petals to divine as to whether Cade really liked me or not. An odd number meant yes, an even, no.

At the moment odds were winning three to one.

Yeah, I was being stupid and sophomoric.

Or was I completely insane?

Maybe.

So, now we were officially kissing, but not really dating. Jeez, there was nothing like setting myself up for a major crash and burn.

How many botched relationships had I endured over the past four years? The worst was Ethan in my freshman year. He looked like a nerdy Tyler Posey and I was idiotic enough to worship him. I still can’t believe I dated that asshole for a year before I found out how much he cheated. I did everything for that bastard. I even went on a diet because he thought I needed to lose some weight…while he was cheating on me, with a stick figure from his English class, the utter moron.

Thank goodness he graduated last year and I’ll never have to set eyes on his too-cute-for-a-guy face.

Returning to the present, my first clue that the lecture had ended was when everyone started packing up while I still doodled. I had to be losing it. I needed to stop fixating on Cade. Stop kissing him, too.

If I zoned out during another lecture I’d end up failing an exam or at least ruining my A average. Besides, the last thing I needed was to dive into a relationship with the outcome headed straight for a guaranteed heartache. It took me a year to recover from Ethan and between him and my dad, my experience with the opposite sex bordered on catastrophic and pathetic. The only man in my life who had given me any sense of stability was my grandpa.

I grinned. Grandpa was always good at saying the right thing at the right time. I had no idea how he did it…unless he read minds.

As I collected my things and followed the crowd out of class, my cell buzzed with a call from Mom.

I hadn’t told her about Cade, only that I’d received a tutoring assignment and it was going well.

“Hi,” I said, filing outside and taking the path to the deli where I was meeting some friends for lunch.

“Hey, sweetie. I’m at the hospital with Grandpa and thought I’d give you a quick call.”

Stopping dead in my tracks, my heart nearly exploded out of my chest. Did I just think about him because something bad happened? “What hospital? What’s wrong?”

“There’s nothing to worry about, just some routine tests.”

“But where are you?”

“Madison.”

“You came all the way to Madison for routine tests?”

“Well, yes. They have the right equipment here.”

“For what? Is he okay?”

“He’s fine. Groused the whole car ride from Johnson Creek to here. I don’t think it’s serious. He just has had a rasp in his voice that they want to scope and while they have him here they’re doing a colonoscopy as well.
