CHAPTER TWELVE

Since their original plans had them leaving Rowdy’s at three a.m., they’d already made arrangements to stay at Trenda’s house for the night, so that Bella could have her sleepover at the ‘coolest hotel ever.’ It was now midnight. Maggie waited on the doorstep, warm in Nolan’s leather jacket as he ‘swept’ the area, before letting her in. Whatever that meant.

“Come on in, Honey,” he said as he opened the front door back up, and pulled her in out of the cold night air.

“What does ‘swept the area’ mean?”

“It means I’m a paranoid bastard.”

He’d set her little case near the couch, along with his partially filled duffle bag. “I found the guest room, as well as Trenda’s room. Why aren’t you sleeping in Trenda’s room like she suggested?” Nolan asked.

“It seems intrusive. Sleeping on Bella’s bed is fine by me. I slept on a twin bed the entire time I lived in my father’s house.”

“Why don’t you take the guest room? It has a double bed, and I’ll take the couch,” Nolan suggested.

Maggie laughed. “Nope.”

“Hey, I thought you were supposed to be kind of submissive to men, what happened to that?”

“Didn’t you hear? I turned over a new leaf.” She smiled as she went to the kitchen to get a glass of water.

“That makes sense, you were pretty pushy with old Titus. Poking him in the chest and all.”

Maggie smiled. “Yeah, that felt awesome. Almost as good as when you said you were going to protect and care for Iris. Did you mean it?”

Nolan walked up to where Maggie was standing next to the sink. They were almost touching. He looked down at her and his electric blue eyes glowed. “Damned right I meant it. She’s my sister. I can’t believe how much I’ve come to love her in just five days, there is no way she will ever end up in foster care.”

Nolan rubbed the back of his neck. That was a sure sign he was either thinking about something or worried about something. “I’ve already done some research. If I can pass some evaluations from CPS, then I’ll be allowed to adopt her. After that, how I handle things when I have to go out on a mission won’t be their concern.”

“But how will you handle it?”

“I’m not quite sure yet. I can’t be the only single dad who’s a SEAL. I’ll find out how they’re coping.”

Even in the short time they’d been together, Maggie had come to realize how integral being a SEAL was to Nolan. He needed that job, but Iris needed a stable environment.

“Honey,” Nolan prompted as he put his knuckles under her chin and lifted it so she was looking back up at him.

“What?” she asked quietly.

“Have you ever thought about moving close to me, so that maybe we could take care of her together?”

Maggie stepped back and Nolan dropped his hand. “That would never work.”

“Why not?”

How could he even be asking this?

“Because I have to leave. I told you that.”

“So, leave with me to Virginia.
