Chapter Ten

Mason

Dad was supposed to fly back to China today, but after he found out about Mom’s drinking problem, he’s postponed his flight until next week. He’s been proactive in setting Mom up with a therapist who specializes in lonely housewives who turn to booze. That’s not actually on Dr. Brown’s resume, but Dad asked around discreetly, and Dr. Brown came highly recommended. Mom’s first appointment is today.

I’m in the kitchen, quickly stuffing down a toaster waffle, so I’m not late for school, when Mom walks into the room. I tense and she looks about as happy to see me as I am her. Things have been horribly awkward between us lately. I miss the easy relationship we had in the past. I used to feel like she doted on me, now she seems to loathe the sight of me. I’ve tried several times to talk to her, but she doesn’t seem interested in fixing things between us.

“I thought you’d already left for school,” she says brightly, heading to the coffee pot.

“Is that why you came down?” I ask. “Because you thought the coast was clear.”

Her laugh is brittle. “No, silly.” She has her back to me as she pours coffee into a big yellow mug. I got that cup for her for Mother’s Day last year. It says “World’s Best Mom” on it. I’m not sure if she grabbed that particular mug to send me a message, or if it was just the closest one.

“How long is this cold war between us going to go on?” I ask.

She doesn’t respond to me, she simply goes to the fridge and gets some creamer. Once she’s poured the creamy liquid into her drink, she faces me, her expression wary. “I don’t know what you want me to say.”

“I want my mom back. Not this cold shell of a woman who politely leaves the room whenever I enter.”

Pink touches her cheeks. “You betrayed me. I’m not ready to forgive you.”

“And you assaulted me and have no remorse. And yet I’m trying to forgive you,” I mutter. I wish I could just leave this alone. Wouldn’t it be awesome if I could just ignore her and not care that she’s giving me the cold shoulder? But I’m not built that way. I prefer to confront shit, even if it makes it worse.

“I barely tapped you, and you made it sound like I beat you.”

“You had no right to touch me in anger. How do you not know that?” I widen my eyes.

Her face twitches. “Maybe you should move out.”

Shock rolls through me. Both of my parents have always insisted I live at home at least until I graduate high school. “What?”

“We don’t get along and your dad is never here. You should get a place of your own.”

“That was sudden.”

She shrugs. “You’ve wanted to move out for ages.”

“Not really. I wasn’t planning on doing that until I graduated. You know that.” I scowl. “My guess is you don’t want anyone around to see you drink.
