Turkish authorities also have confiscated hundreds of antiquities, particularly in cities adjacent to the border, but are unwilling to disclose information about the objects. The lack of transparency indicates that either Turkey doesn’t take the illicit trade of antiquities seriously, or it fails to keep tabs on the smuggled objects it has recovered.1032 Attorney Eyup Sabri Tinas from the border city of Urfa opined that smuggling cannot be entirely prevented, as many smugglers have political connections and relationships with the authorities in charge of monitoring them.1033

DEFEATING ISIS CULTURAL CLEANSING

Despite the loss of three major World Heritage sites to ISIS’s cultural cleansing campaign, none of the opposing participants have made an effort to stop the marauding through military means. The airpower and intelligence capacity exist. Global political conferences and diplomats have discussed the damage to no end. There is a disgracefully insufficient level of cooperation between the world of heritage protection practitioners, the world’s governments, and the American military coalition fighting ISIS. There must be an urgent revolution to identify, protect, and preserve the significant cultural artifacts in the Middle East combat zones. To that end some of the solutions that could slow or stop the march of ISIS’s attempts to culturally cleanse the Middle East and North Africa are clear.
