Chapter Thirteen
Sheldon Kyloâs apartment was a two-room addition to the back of a house on Twenty-Fourth Avenue South where the road met up with South Spokane Street. It sat on a corner lot adjacent to Jefferson Park and was located southeast of the city near the industrial district.
Dash brought his sports car in case the need arose to zip through traffic quickly, but there was no drama on the ride over.
The sun was rising, and there was a light on inside the small apartment. A subcompact electric car was parked in front of the door. Dash figured these were good signs Sheldon was home.
He knocked on the door three times. Three taps in rapid succession.
âMr. Kylo, my name is Special Agent Dash West,â he said, using his authoritative voice. âWe know you are home, so you might as well open up.â
The door swung open, and a very agitated young man stood there with a scornful look on his face. His skin was sallow. He was tall and looked like he hadnât quite filled out yet. His arms looked more like rubber bands than anything else. He wore a wrinkled T-shirt depicting a grimacing middle finger. His gaze shifted from Dash to Raina, and then his shoulders sagged.
âWhat are you doing here?â Now he sounded put out. âI walked away from that job.â
âIâd like to ask you a few questions,â Dash said.
âYou can start by answering mine.â Sheldon glared at Raina. âWhat is she doing here?â
The kid didnât seem scared or guilty. Then again, with an IQ that had him finishing both high school and college a year early, he might be the smartest guy in the room. Duly noted. What the kid had in IQ, Dash had in experience.
Sheldon leaned into the doorjamb and held the door close to his body, effectively blocking their view to the inside of his place.
âYou know Raina Andress,â Dash countered. He pulled his badge from his hip clip and showed it to Sheldon.
People reacted one of two ways when they saw that badge: they were either scared or relieved. Sheldon was indifferent. Like Dash had just shown him a test grade that came out to a C in a class like PE.
Sheldon almost looked like heâd been expecting the visit, but Dash must be misreading him. A cocky kid like this would never accept that someone with a lesser IQ than him would catch on to him.
âDid you interact with Layla West during your internship at Baker Financial?â Dash continued, not missing a beat.
âNo. Why?â His bland gray eyes suddenly sparked. âOh. Right. The person who embezzled two million dollars?â
âHow do you know about the case?â Dash asked.
âItâs all over the news,â he said with a nonchalant shrug.
Dash took note that Sheldon knew the exact amount of money missing. Of course, two million dollars would seem like a lot of money to most people.
âCan we come in, Mr. Kylo?â Dash didnât figure the answer would be yes, but it was always worth asking.
âFor what?â Sheldonâs face wrinkled like heâd just eaten a pickled prune.
