Chapter 5 - Quick Tips to Declutter
Decluttering requires a plan and a method. You should do it in an organized manner in order for it to produce successful and long-term results. However, you donât always have to be too strict with the plan of action. Some days, you can do little things here and there that can make a lot of difference in the long run. Here are 10 quick tips on how to declutter your home effectively:
Tip No. 1 - Give five minutes of your time each day for decluttering.
Choose one area that you wish to focus on. You can also choose one quick decluttering task from your checklist and do it. This task may seem too tiny, but as you go along, you will be able to see how much impact you have made in the bigger picture.
Tip No. 2 - Give away one item every day.
If you canât dispose of it immediately, then you can place a box and toss it there for you to sell or give out eventually. It wouldnât hurt so much when you give away one item each day as opposed to letting go of many things all at once. You wouldnât be too conscious of it and you wouldnât feel its loss. This is especially true when you are the sentimental type who usually gets attached to things.
Tip No. 3 - Grab a trash bag.
Go to a room and fill the bag up with the stuff that you no longer need. You will be surprised how quickly it can get filled and how many of the things occupying space in your room are no longer necessary, then sort these out to the things that you definitely have to throw out and the things that you can sell or give away.
Tip No. 4 - Try Oprah Winfreyâs closet hanger experiment.
It is not exactly her idea, but she is one of those who made this concept more popular. This is one thing that you can do when you are trying to clear your closet. You simply have to hang all your clothes with the hangers in reverse direction, then when you wear a piece, return it facing the correct direction.
After a few months, you get to see the pieces you actually wear and the ones you barely touch at all. This tip is quicker and easier than staring at your closet the entire day trying to figure out which pieces should go or stay.
Tip No. 5 - Start with the easy ones.
As decluttering an entire home will be a tremendous task, it will be healthier and more encouraging if you start with the easy ones. When you list and schedule your tasks, start with the easiest ones and gradually upgrade to the more difficult ones.
Tip No. 6 - Try the 12-12-12 technique.
When you get into a room that you have to clear out, try looking for 12 items that you should throw out, 12 items to donate and 12 items to keep. You can sort 36 things in total without even noticing it.
