Chapter 25

MILES AND PENNY GET A

NEW TRUCK AND SUV

On Wednesday morning Miles got to work about five minutes early. Betty and Billy were already there, drinking coffee with a box of a dozen donuts sitting on the table in front of them.

“Good morning, Miles,” Billy said. “I’d like you to meet Betty, my wife.”

Miles said, “Hello, Betty. Good to meet you. I’ve heard so much about you. Congratulations on your wedding—Billy’s a really good man.”

Betty put her arm around Billy’s neck and pulled him close. “I know. I’m so thankful.”

Billy grew visibly uncomfortable with her affection and whispered loudly to her, “Don’t do that in front of the guys!”

Betty just smiled, but she removed her arm from Billy’s neck.

Billy said to Miles, “Have a donut, and here is your coffee. We need to talk about our plans for the rest of the week.”

“Right.”

Just then Smash walked in. “All right! Donuts and coffee! Great way to start a morning. How you doing, Billy? How was your trip to Ohio?”

“It was, um, pretty incredible. I’d actually like you to meet Betty— my wife.”

“You’re wife? Man, why didn’t you tell us? We totally missed your wedding!”

“I know,” Billy said sheepishly. “I was keeping it on the down-low. I was really nervous, man, and I wanted you guys to be there, but I didn’t really know how to break the news to you.”

“Well, wow,” Smash said, and he walked over to Betty and gave her a hug. “Welcome to the family!”

“Thank you,” Betty said. “I’m so glad to be a part of it. But I just have to ask—your name is really Smash? I thought Billy was just making that up.”

Smash gave a heavy, deep laugh. “Yep. That’s me.”

Even Billy cracked a big smile, and Miles laughed.

Then Billy turned to Miles again. “So, about the plans for this week. Today, I want you to do electronic inventory of our shops and get everything ordered. People seem to be getting more oil changes now than they were last year at this time, and I want to make sure we have enough inventory on hand.”

“You got it, boss.”

“Then take the rest of the day off, since we have work for you to do tomorrow, and it’s going to be a long day.”

“You got it,” Miles said again.

“And actually, this afternoon I’d like for you and Penny to go and buy a pickup truck for you and an SUV for Penny—our only request is that both of them be four-wheel drive and the same brands we have. And get the factory hitch installed too—that’s always so helpful to have available.”

A look of disbelief came over Miles’ face, and he bent down and put his face in his hands and started crying. “Why are you so good to me?”

“This is how the Lord has directed us,” said Billy. “Now, here is the model type of both vehicles we’d like you to get. We’ll stock parts in the community, and we all need to have the same kind of vehicle.
