Extracurricular Activities
The first place your student may want to get involved is school-sponsored sports, clubs, and activities. Each high school is different, but there are usually a lot of options to choose from—from the obvious activities like sports and choir to model United Nations, regional art shows, foreign language clubs, mentoring groups, science bowls, and even community service projects.
Now, keep in mind that not every club or activity will be part of the path to college. Some can be just plain fun! But their choice of activities shouldn’t interfere with college goals. Also, the key ingredient in extracurricular activities is the role your student takes in the group. Colleges are looking for leaders. If they play a sport, then encourage them to be the team captain. They don’t have to be the best athlete to be a leader. Or, if they love to talk like I do, they could join the debate club and become the team captain. Their choices of activities should include things they like and show evidence of their best effort.
Now, a word of warning. The biggest mistake I see students make today with extracurriculars is getting involved in way too many activities. We want our student’s college resumé to look great, but if your kid is a three-sport athlete, student council member, in the chess club, on the debate team, and an art club member, it also probably means they’re spread way too thin! There’s not a perfect number of activities to be involved in, just be realistic about your child’s interests and time.
Eli is a great example of this. My man Eli was the point guard of his school’s freshman basketball team. But as he started looking toward college, he wanted to focus on leadership versus just an activity. He stopped playing for the school and focused on his role as class president of student council and treasurer of a math club. You want to know why this decision was extra tough? His dad was the high school basketball coach! But his dad supported his choice because he knew Eli had a plan. Eli had already determined which colleges he was interested in attending and that he wasn’t going to be a college athlete. He wanted to focus his energy on leadership and volunteer opportunities, and he needed to walk away from sports to do that. Eli played ball for fun but threw himself into the things that would get him closer to his goal. You won’t be surprised to hear that his tough decision paid off when he received several large college scholarships.
