Chapter 7

Of course, to make the spirit communication work the way it should, she was still going to need something personal that had belonged to Neil Perkins.

Darcy hadn’t seen the man’s ghost since they got back to the Inn. He’d disappeared just like that, as if he was scared of something here. It was weird to think of a ghost being scared of anything, since they usually did the scaring, but there it was.

If his killer was here at the Inn, wouldn’t that be something to be scared of? Maybe so. Darcy didn’t know for sure, because she’d never been dead.

Sharlene Latham was here at the Inn. Neil’s killer.

Darcy just had to prove it.

Well it wouldn’t be the first time she’d found herself in the middle of a murder mystery. She knew the thing she needed was proof. The note on the computer was an important piece of the puzzle, but Jon and she had talked about it and decided the police wouldn’t take it seriously. Not Investigator David Stacker, certainly.

The computer was out in the open and there was no password on it. Sharlene didn’t have the business sense to see why one was important. It was one of the many things she and Jon had planned to fix while they were here, although all of those things were on the back burner now that there’d been a murder. The point was, the police would just say anyone had access to the computer and could have written that note onto it. Jon and Darcy included. They wanted to prove Sharlene killed Neil, not make themselves into suspects.

She needed proof. Neil’s ghost might be able to point her in the right direction, if she could contact him again. The scaredy-ghost was hiding right now. So, she was going to have to go searching for him.

Thankfully, in Maxwell’s letter he spelled out that Neil Perkins lived here at the Hideaway Inn as part of his employment. They hadn’t met last winter because at that time, so close to Christmas, all of the staff had been sent home for the end of the season. Since he did have a room here, that meant he had stuff here. Personal items, clothes, even a pen could work for Darcy’s purposes.

She knew where the staff quarters were in the West Wing. She could get a master key from the office. It shouldn’t be hard at all for her to sneak into Neil’s room and find the perfect thing to make a connection with his ghost.

There hadn’t been anything to speak of in the room Neil was renting at the All In Motel. That meant his things still had to be here. Probably, he had to leave it all behind when Sharlene kicked him out. He must not have had time to get it. Or he was hoping to get his job back, and his living space with it. That would actually work in her favor because she planned on doing the whole thing right there in his room, where she wasn’t likely to be disturbed.
