The next weeks were filled with all that goes with ramping up business. It was crazy, and I was glad when Betty came in full time. Working together, we made it happen.
âJakeâs back,â Betty told me.
âHe didnât call. How is he?â
âI donât exactly know, even though heâs staying with me. He asked me to get everyone together this weekend. Heâs being dramatic and wants to tell everyone his news all at once.â
Betty doesnât think much of people who are being dramatic.
âAnd you donât have a clue?â I asked.
âI donât speculate.â Her schoolteacher grimace put me in my place. âJust get over to my house Saturday afternoon. Iâll make a huge vat of spaghetti and we will send the kids off to eat in the television room.â
âWhy?â
âBecause the television room has vinyl floors and wiping up the inevitable spilled sauce isnât a big deal?â
âI mean, why have the kids eat separately?â
Betty sneered. âBecause Iâm sure Jake feels the need to be grown-up dramatic over wine or something stronger and they donât really know whatâs going on. Heâs going to rent some new movie that Doreen said they are clamoring to see.â
With the turmoil at work I found myself looking forward to a relaxing get together and hearing how the new therapy had gone. Seeing him made my stomach knot up. Heâd lost even more weight and his pale skin told me he hadnât gotten any beach time.
âHow are you?â I asked as we settled into chairs on the patio.
âFirstââ Jake held up a bottle of a whisky that Iâd only heard about. It was absurdly expensive. I couldnât help but think of the cost of each glass as he poured out healthy drinks, neat. âNow, I know I owe you all, each of you, an explanation. You deserve to know what is going on. But first a toast. Lâchaimâto lifeâ
Not one of us had a snappy reply to that. I sipped my drink, and the others did the same. Jake drank, then took a deep breath.
âThe trip I took to Thailand wasnât successful.â
âTheir pain therapies didnât work?â I asked.
âThatâs no surprise,â Betty said. âIf they worked, then doctorâs hereââ
âWhen I came back, I didnât come straight here. I made a side trip up to the Mayo clinic in Phoenix. That wasnât productive either, except in confirming the diagnosis.â
âI thought it was chronic pain.â
He paused to taste his drink again. âDamn thatâs fine stuff. Anyway, the thing is Iâve been lying. Now I have to come clean. I donât have a chronic condition.â
âThatâs a relief,â I said.
âIs it?â He sighed. âSorry, Iâm being flip. It isnât a relief. You see chronic means âcontinuing or occurring again and again for a long time.â I looked it up. That makes this a rare situation because the doctors and the dictionary agree on something.â
âSo your pain isnât chronic?â
âNo. You see, although it does continue and reoccurs, it wonât persist for the long time that makes it chronic.â
âI told you he wanted to be dramatic,â Betty said.
