CHAPTER 9
âAlice! Sheâs not answering her phone,â stammered Anne Barnsley.
âDid you call the school?â
âI tried, but they said she was in class. I donât believe it. Even if she couldnât take the call because she was in class, Alice would text me to say sheâd call me back. Iâm terrified Fay has hurt her in some way.â
âWhy would she do that?â
Anne shook her head.
âI donât know. I donât even want to think about it because itâs so awful,â she cried, clenching the steering wheel with her hands. âI just want my baby to be alright.â
She definitely knew more than she was willing to reveal, I realised. But was it something solid or was it just a suspicion?
âCan you go to the school and check on her?â
âNot without an appointment. I have to wait for her to call me back.â
âWhen did you last speak to her?â
âYesterday morning. We were supposed to do a video chat this evening, but Iâm worried about her, Sitara. What if Fay has hurt her?â
âIf she had to hurt her, she would have done it long ago,â I pointed out.
âBut she was so angry the day I brought her to you. What if sheâs trying to prove she didnât kill herself?â
âIf she didnât kill herself, who do you think killed her?â I asked gently. âYou do suspect someone, donât you?â
Anne shuddered and banged her head softly on the steering wheel.
âSheâs not a bad child. Sheâs not mean and angry like Fay. I know she did her best to be kind to her, but she was heartbroken when Fay stole her story.â
I sat back in my seat, waiting for her to say it out loud.
âIf she did do it - and Iâm not saying she did - but if she did kill Fay, it must have been an accident,â she said desperately.
âWhen did you begin to suspect Alice?â
Anne glared at me and wiped her eyes angrily.
âDonât say it like that! Suspect is an ugly word,â she cried. âItâs just that she was so sad about Fayâs death. I would have thought sheâd be relieved the endless bullying was over for good. There was no love lost between them, so I knew she wasnât grieving the way my husband was grieving. It was guilt, but I didnât see what she had to be guilty about when Fay was the one who was in the wrong.â
âDid you know about the fight?â
Anne nodded.
âThe head teacher told me about it the day it happened, and I was shocked because Alice has always been a timid child. I would never have expected her to lash out at Fay so openly. But I was glad she stood up to her. I only hope she didnât take it too far. Thatâs partly why I put up with Fay when she began to haunt me. I didnât want her to focus on Alice. I was happy to take the brunt of her anger as long as she left her sister alone.â
âThen why did you approach me?â
âBecause I thought you could free us from her,â she said shakily.
