CHAPTER FOURTEEN
Three years after the release of Deathâs Gate
Andrew walked directly down the middle of Mainstreet. Only a few cars peppered the previously busy roadway, and it was quiet, deadly quiet.
The city was close to deserted. Huge, towering buildings stood against the pristine blue skyline and stretched for eternity in all directions. It was almost the antithesis of what you would expect a post-apocalyptic scenario would look like. Most storefronts remained intact with almost no looting evident. A cloudy, haze filled the sky, but it was natural and without any traces of smog with an occasional car parked on the side of the road, punctuating the once busy intersections. Vines and trees were already reclaiming that which was stolen from them so many centuries ago. Birds and foxes and housecats roamed freely in and out of storefronts and it was peaceful, beautiful, like the world had moved on.
He looked like a walking corpse. A shadow of a husk, and yet there was still strength in his withered bones, supernatural strength that shown in the brights of his eyes.
He was hungry, and couldnât remember the last time he ate or drank anything â but he didnât need much sustenance these days. The cravings passed and he moved on, much like the world. It was the dawn of a new era.
A blank face stared at him through a window over a formally occupied cafe and before he could get a good look, the blinds snapped shut.
While his mind and spirit have grown, extensively, he didnât see himself as a holy man - or even the chosen - only a vessel. All he could say, with any certainty, was he was a messenger. And even so, his work was just beginning. In a way, it pleased him. It's what the world required he was nothing if not adaptable.
Below his golden pendant on his chest, his torn up shirt flapped in the clean breeze. A pair of pendants jingled below his shoestring belt, and his sandals were close to falling apart. Perhaps it was time for a new pair. His shirt could have been a prison jumpsuit at one time, but now the color was so faded and washed out, it was hard to tell. It was multihued with questionably dark stains that could have been anything.
His glasses were gone, but he didnât miss them. He was guided by something bigger than himself, bigger than this world, bigger than all worlds.
He knew every day he drew closer to absolution, he had faith, it was the great void's will to open the gate and let the flood swell.
The mysterious abyss worked in fantastic ways and every day he gained and grew closer to it. The great void provided for all, and that much he knew to be true. The floodgates had opened. And all he had to do was wait.
He sat down on an old bus bench overgrown with vines and fresh berries and popped one into his mouth and its sour juices made his cracked lips pucker.
