Chapter 18

There was something liberating about being on the back of a motorbike. As much as they scared me, the wind in my hair and the sense of freedom riding through the night filled with some awesome elation. Everything else dropped away, leaving me smiling in Death’s presence. No Type B influence, just me.

And the firmness between my legs…

“You okay back there?” Death called, his hair the most incredible shimmer of copper and black.

“I’m fine!” I returned.

I came close to letting him go, to lifting my hands in the air. But thought better of it.

“You can do it, you know?”

“What?” I yelled.

“I can feel your temptation. Go for it. You won’t fall.”

He could feel it? Well, I guess he was Death and harbored all sorts of powers.

“Put your hands in the air like you just don’t care!” he declared, followed by a whoop.

I laughed, hesitant at first. We were moving so fast. What if he was wrong, and I fell and cracked my head open? Scrambled egg brains on the asphalt wasn’t a good look.

“Go for it!” he cried again.

I counted down from five, terrified out of my mind, adrenaline pumping.

Five.

Four.

Three—

I went on three, throwing my arms above my head. I whooped in exaltation. Wow. Talk about fun and scary and just plain fucking awesome.

“Go, Marcel!” Death bellowed, ripping on that throttle.

He did a wheelie. I screamed and grabbed him again.

He roared with laughter. “Sorry.”

But I wasn’t mad. A further thrill of excitement shot through me. I released him, threw my arms out.

“Do it again!”

He did, me whooping and not falling off. Something held me to the bike. Probably his special brand of immortal magic.

I could do this all night.

The fun times died when we arrived at the sloping road leading down to the caves. Got really snuffed out when Death killed the engine outside the ominous maw waiting to swallow me again.

I slid off the bike. A cold sweat pooled at my spine, sending an army of icy shivers through me.

“Dammit…” I whispered.

“Are you okay?” Death asked, his hand on my shoulder.

I nodded, mouth dry.

“You’re not, though.”

I shook my head.

“You don’t have to worry,” he added. “The moment the poltergeist turns, it’s gone.”

“You can do that?”

“Yes.”

I swallowed, blinking at him. “Don’t suppose you brought some wine with you?”

He smiled. “It just so happens I did bring a little something.” He touched his right hip, a golden hip flask appearing from nowhere.

“What the hell?”

“Death perk.” He winked. “Here, take a sip.”

I took the flask from him, the top popping off easily. The scent of aniseed wafted from it.

“Absinthe,” he said.

“Really?”

“Yes. Take a sip.”

“Isn’t that super strong?”

He shrugged. “Depends on how you take your booze.”

I could already tell the drink would blow my socks off. “I’ll pass. Thanks anyway.”

“Suit yourself.” He took a glug, then put the flask back to his right hip. It vanished within a second.

“Whenever you’re ready, we’ll head inside.”

He handed me a torch.

“Where did this come from?” I asked, taking it.

“Already told you.”

“Death perk.”

“Exactly.”

That’s not really an answer.
