And to Dena’s credit, she worked this angle hard. Designs for Sean the Leprechaun were sent to toy manufacturers all over the UK and United States. In 1988, all of that hard work appeared to have paid off. That was when Dena excitedly showed her husband a letter from the Walt Disney Corporation offering to buy the rights to Sean in a multi-million deal. Lee Wyatt had no idea that the letter was fake.

In fact, Dena had invented the Disney story to cover up an unexplained source of income. She had begun defrauding her employer, Woolwich Building Society, stealing £26,000 over a short period of time. Now the story had created a new problem. Sooner or later, Lee would expect the Disney deal to come to fruition. After all, the offer they had received stood to make them millionaires. It was to cover up this pending complication that Dena invented yet another lie, her most outrageous yet. She told Lee that she had been contacted by a sinister character who represented American mob interests. The mafia had got wind of their deal with Disney and wanted in. They were threatening to kill Lee unless she signed over the rights to Sean the Leprechaun. The only option, she said, was for Lee to go on the run.
