“She became a double agent.”

Mia’s soft words break through the haze of sleep threatening to overtake me. I blink my eyes open and pull her closer, kissing her hair. “Which other country?”

She looks up at me. “America.”

That comes as a surprise, but as I think about it, I know that it shouldn’t. Her moving so often after giving birth to Mia. Was she under federal protection? “When did she split sides?”

“She had just turned forty and was caught while attempting to assassinate the US Ambassador to Nicaragua. From what Papa told me, she hesitated in killing him, although her sleeping with the man had been a setup. A test.”

Nicaragua.

I suppress a shudder as I remember how Mia died there, how limp her body was for those few pain-filled minutes. How pale she was as the life drained from her. The way she looked at me when she miraculously opened her eyes again.

“And she passed the test?” I say, shaking away those terrible memories. “Or failed, however you look at it.”

Mia makes a sound that might be a laugh. “Yes. Apparently, the US had been on to her for a while. The one thing the Russians didn’t think about was how Mom’s movements, since she was such a popular musician, could be so easily tracked and that people ending up dead wherever she had a concert wouldn’t be a coincidence for too long.”

“Or maybe they began setting her up,” I offer and she looks up at me, frowning. “A honeypot’s usefulness is age dependent, Mia. If she was approaching forty, they probably began to see her more as a liability than an asset. Remember, they didn’t start having her kill her targets until she was thirty-eight or so, which leads me to conclude they felt her, um, sexual attraction to the opposite sex had decreased.”

I feel Mia bristle in my arms, and I kiss her hair. “That’s terrible. Thirty-eight is—”

“Young. Yes, it is, but not for that field. So, they found a way for her to be useful in a different way. Assassins also have a short shelf life, Mia. She probably knew that. Spooks know too much, have seen too much, which is a liability in itself. It’s not unheard of for a government to eliminate those with too much knowledge.” I meet her eyes. “Especially a smart and sexy woman who knows how to infiltrate the beds of powerful men. That, I assume, would be especially threatening.”

Mia looks up at me. “So the Russians set her up?”

I nod. “It’s very possible. If the ambassador was heavily protected, as he probably was, then she would kill him and then be killed by his protection. A win-win for the Soviets.”

Mia gasps. “Would they do that?”

I scoff. “Sweetheart, you wouldn’t believe all that any government would do. To them, individual sacrifice is just part of protecting the whole. Russia most likely had dozens of backups by then, any number of replacements ready to step into her shoes.”

“My poor mom,” Mia whispers and presses her lips to my shoulder.
