Chapter 14

“There’s no such thing as being off duty for a Cavanaugh, is there, Sky?” Kristin asked one of the very first women who had befriended her when the medical examiner had initially attended one of Uncle Andrew’s gatherings.

Skylar smiled as she looked at Kristin. “What do you think?” she asked.

“I think that you—and I—are going to be working until the day we both keel over...which, I suppose, is not entirely such a bad way to go,” the medical examiner commented. “I had planned on doing that myself, actually.”

The detective laughed. “I knew we were of like mind.”

“Tell me exactly what you’re looking for,” Kristin asked the other woman.

Before Skylar could say anything to enlighten the medical examiner, Cody spoke up, answering the woman’s question. “What we want to know is if this woman was pregnant when they fished her out at the time of her death, just like Carrie was. And if she was pregnant, would you be able to determine who the father was at this early stage, or is it too soon for you to be able to tell?”

The victim certainly didn’t look pregnant, but it was possible because, if this was a first-time pregnancy and this was a very early stage, she could very well not be showing yet.

Admittedly, Cody was going with his gut and playing a hunch.

“Well, if you have a sample of the father’s DNA that I can match it against, then sure,” Kristin answered. “I can tell.”

He had no idea who the father of Carrie’s baby was—yet. But there had to be a way around that, Cody reasoned. After all, Carrie’s friend Nancy had identified Brent Masterson as the boyfriend. “Could you match a sample of it to the DNA of another fetus?”

Kristin gazed at her cousin-in-law, then back at Cody. It was obvious by her expression that the medical examiner wasn’t quite clear what the deputy was driving at. “I’m afraid that I’m going to need more than that, Deputy.”

Cody hated going over this, but he knew he had to, to get justice for Carrie. And right now, that was the most important thing to him.

“My twin sister was pregnant when she was killed,” he reminded Kristin. “I don’t know the name of the man who got this latest victim pregnant, but there has to be a way to match the DNA from my sister’s baby to the one found in this woman—that is, if it turns out that this young woman was pregnant when she died.”

Kristin turned the words over in her head, then nodded. “What makes you think that this woman was pregnant?” she asked. She hadn’t been able to determine that much yet.

Cody shrugged. “Just a gut feeling,” he confessed, expecting the doctor to laugh at him.

Instead, Kristin nodded her head. “Oh, the ever-popular Cavanaugh gut feeling,” she murmured. “You’ve been hanging around Skylar too much,” she told him. “It’s practically a science with these people.” Her eyes swept over first Skylar then Cody. “I take it neither one of you has an ID on who this so-called father is? It would make this a lot easier.
