The A1 was like a giant, angry monster, roaring just out of sight. She’d found it easily enough, had heard it from the back of the church. She’d crossed the fields and was beneath it now, following its course north.

But the field she was trying to cross had been ploughed and was thick with mud. Within minutes her shoes had more than doubled their weight as earth clung to them. She was forced to stop frequently. And yet hardly had she cleaned them before they clogged up again. She pressed on, knowing it could be nearly fifteen miles to Berwick-upon-Tweed.

The road was too close. Each time a large lorry went by, she was showered with fine drops of oily water, mud and even small stones. The hedge was protecting her to some extent, holding back the splashes from the cars, but the lorries were too big.

It took for ever to cross the first field. She fell to her knees more than once, soon filthy. It was starting to feel hopeless.

‘Jessica!’

Her heart thudding, she turned. On the bank above her, having climbed over the metal barrier and pushed through the spindly plantation of young trees, stood the vicar from St Mary’s.

What did this mean? Had he called the police? Was Faa with him?

Harry began to scramble down the bank. ‘My car’s up top,’ he called when he was close enough. ‘I pulled over as soon as I could.’

‘How did you find me?’

‘I saw you run past the vestry window heading for open countryside.’ He looked down at his own shoes and pulled a face. ‘When my churchwardens left, I saw a bloke in the church and I really didn’t like the cut of his jib. He bolted the front door, for one thing. I decided discretion was the better part of valour and left through the vestry. Come on, I’ll drive you to Berwick.’
