CHAPTER EIGHT
âMaybe thereâs been a power cut.â Dev was squinting through the glass, his breath steaming against the chill of the pane.
âIf there has itâs managed to knock out the moon and the stars as well.â Sandra was shaking her head. âItâs like someoneâs coated the whole building in black paint.â
âMaybe thatâs whatâs happened.â Richard was trying to think. He looked up and saw the disbelieving expressions of his two colleagues. âI donât mean literally,â he said. âI mean something has succeeded in cutting this hospital off from the rest of the world.â
Dev frowned. âWhat for?â
There was a groan from behind them, a mere semblance of words mumbled through lips too tired, or too scared, to work properly.
They turned to see Simon on his knees, clawing gently at the opposite wall.
âBloody hell, Simon.â Sandra tried to pull him to his feet, but he resisted. She managed to turn his face so they could hear what he was saying, though. Three words, repeated over and over.
âHeâ¦Isâ¦Coming.â
âWhat?â Sandra had taken Simon by the shoulders and was obviously resisting the urge to shake him. âWho is coming? What do you mean?â
âHe canât hear you, Sandra.â Richard crouched beside her and flashed a pen torch in the house officerâs eyes. âThereâs no reaction,â he said, doing it again. âSee? His pupils donât even constrict. Heâs no longer with us.â
âThen where is he?â That was Dev.
âI donât know.â Richard turned to his friend. âJust because Iâve seen a few more weird things than you doesnât mean I have any more of a clue about any of this than you do.â
âYou have that book,â said Sandra.
âWhich no-one can read, yes.â Richard looked back at Simon, who was picking at a crack in the plaster and whispering something into it. âI think we should probably stop him doing that,â he said.
Sandra tried to pull Simon away but it was no good.
âI think I might need some help here, chaps,â she said.
Sandra and Dev tried to pull Simon away.
Then Sandra and Dev and Richard tried to pull Simon away.
When Simon eventually moved, part of the wall came with him.
No, not part of the wall.
Part of Simon.
In a way.
âWhat the hell is that?â Sandra was staring in horror at the stretched pink elongations of the index and middle fingers of Simonâs right hand, turning them into pale tentacles of flesh that reached as far as the wall, and disappeared into it.
âSomething in the wall has merged with his fingers.â Dev reached down to pull at them but Richard slapped him away. âDonât touch them!â he said. âYou might end up like him!â
âWhat am I supposed to do, then?â Dev looked helpless. âWe canât just leave him like that.â
âI think a surgical solution is needed here.â Sandra took out a small pocket knife, opened one of the blades, and cut smartly through the things that were attaching Simon to the wall.
A scream akin to that of a pig being slaughtered filled the air. All three looked at Simon, but the desperate cry wasnât coming from him.
