Alexi got off the phone and looked down at his captive. “Your friend, he is not so concerned about you as I think, eh?”

Norm was tied to a chair, the only furniture in the near-empty basement. He had a welt under his eye from being clubbed by a pistol a day earlier, and a sour look that would have been there either way.

“I’m betting he cares a little more than you do,” he retorted.

“He is a little bit crazy, yes? He kidnap my girl, try to make trade…”

“Let me guess: she’s not as important to you as you are.”

Alexi’s eyes narrowed, his smirk disappearing instantly, replaced by a thin, cruel line. “Don’t think that because you are old, I will take your insults, Norm O’Hearn. You want another smack to the head, eh?”

“You’re going to do what you want regardless of what I want.”

The Russian inhaled heavily through both nostrils, letting his anger subside. He did not want the old man seeing weakness, and reacting angrily was weakness.

“If we have prepared correctly, it is quite possible your friend and my enemy will both be dead this afternoon. Then all of this becomes unnecessary, and… I let you go.”

Norm looked up at the man, trying to gauge his expression for the slightest sign of sincerity. “Yeah, sure you will.”

“I will. I say I will, so I will.”

“Alive?”

Alexi smirked slightly. “We see.”

“I don’t know Bob real well, but I think I got a little measure of the man a decade ago, when he helped out a few guys at the club. If he wants to, he’ll find you. And I don’t like your chances of making the bell for the second round.”

“Maybe.” Alexi took his left hand out of his jacket pocket. It was holding a small canister with a curved handle on top. “This is MK3A2 concussion grenade. Enough explosive in confined space to turn Bob into bloody pile of dead. All I have to do is pull this pin” — he pulled the pin but kept its trigger depressed — “and friend Bob is corpse. He get as close to you as I am now, maybe I let go, and take all three of us to hell together.”

Norm just stared at him implacably. “You forget to put that pin back in because you’re busy showing off, we won’t have to wait for him.”

Alexi slid the restrictor pin back into place. He felt a surge of annoyance. The old man was either not afraid of death or a very good actor.

But it would not matter. Soon, they would find the address of the house rented the day prior and come for a visit. Whether it was Bob or Victor or both, he intended to be ready.
