CHAPTER 18

I turned and made my way toward Lt. Colonel Flynn’s office. My mind was soon back on the brief I had given Flynn just minutes ago, explaining how Davis was eager to help cut through the red tape to send the Rangers’ team on a covert mission to Sofia. Flynn knew about Zara’s abduction and empathized with my sense of responsibility to save her from being sold into a sex ring in Sofia. Flynn was on board with getting Davis to sort out the mission, sparing him the endless administrative tasks required to pull it off.

As I approached Flynn’s office, I nodded to his secretary, Staff Sergeant Jessica Collins. She was a no-nonsense NCO with short, sharp blonde hair and keen blue eyes that missed nothing. Her desk was immaculate, with neatly stacked files, a computer, and a framed picture of her family.

“Captain Blaze, you can go in. They’re expecting you,” she said, her voice crisp and professional.

I nodded and knocked on the door before stepping inside.

Flynn’s office was utilitarian but organized. The walls were adorned with maps of Afghanistan, framed commendations, and photos of past deployments. Flynn’s desk was a sturdy, well-used piece of furniture, cluttered with mission files, a computer, a landline phone, and a coffee mug emblazoned with the battalion insignia. Davis was seated across from Flynn, a tablet in his hands.

“Captain, come in,” Flynn said, motioning for me to take a seat. “We’ve been discussing the logistics. Deputy Director Davis is already moving to get the necessary intel and clearance.”

I took a seat, my posture straight and ready. Flynn leaned forward, his eyes serious.

“Captain, this mission is essentially a civilian operation from our perspective. You and your team will be on leave with a pass to leave the base for three days. Are you and the boys willing and ready for this?”

“Roger that, sir. The men are raring to go. We’ll do whatever it takes.”

Flynn nodded in approval. “Good. Then I wish you luck, Captain. Bring those girls home.”

I stood up and exchanged firm handshakes with Flynn and Davis.

“Escort Director Davis to the meeting room, then report back here for a last-minute briefing,” Flynn added.

“Yes, sir,” I replied, turning to Davis. “Right this way, sir.”

We exited Flynn’s office and made our way back to the briefing room.

“I know I don’t need to say it, but try to keep Maddie out of harm’s way,” Davis said as he entered the room.

“I will,” I promised as I turned to head back to Flynn’s room.

When I entered, I found Flynn leaning back in his chair with a thoughtful look on his face, his fingers steepled.

“Blaze, remember, you’re not fighting the Taliban in Sofia. Be mindful of the body count. We’re not looking to start an international incident,” Flynn said, his voice low but firm.

I knew exactly what he meant. If things went south, it would be his head on the line, black op or not.

“I understand, sir,” I replied, meeting his gaze squarely. “I’ll be mindful of the collateral damage.
