Hours passed before the Irishman returned alone. The day had taken its toll on Garret, and despite the excitement; he nodded off in the truck. Upon the Irishman's arrival, Maps nudged him awake.

"I'm up." Garret yawned.

He got out of the truck to stretch his legs and greet the Irishman. Maps loaded the back of the truck with two backpacks filled with food supplies and a duffel bag loaded to the brim with ammo. He tied together the extra shotguns and rifles with a bungee cord and laid them in the truck's bed.

"Let me guess. Crawford is dead," Garret said.

"Death would have been mercy," the Irishman said. "I let the fat-ass go. Don't think he will make it far with that blown off foot either." The Irishman reached into his pocket. "Brought you a trinket though."

In the darkness, Garret couldn't see what the Irishman tossed him. Something round and slick. A wet piece of an eyeball. Garret dropped it and wiped his hands off on his pants as the Irishman laughed.

"Disgusting."

"Yeah, I couldn't get the other one to pop out like that."

"You're sick," Garret said, his stomach gurgling.

"He talked after I took his right eye. There's a tanker full of gas, a couple of miles from here," the Irishman said with a smile. "Fill up tomorrow and we can put this place in the rearview."

"About that. Cody, Alyssa, their Mom, and Malcolm want to come with us."

"Too bad," the Irishman said. "We don't have food for 'em. This ain't a fucking convoy."

"Half of those supplies are theirs." Garret pointed to the truck.

"So? We're the ones with guns."

"Jake is coming with us." Maps joined the discussion.

"No shit, I know you two developed some weird father son relationship in that jail. But the brother and sister and their bat shit crazy mom is another story," the Irishman spat. "And for Malcolm, you're lucky I didn't execute him back in crazyville."

"Hey, you know what's a good idea? Let's invite Logan and his dickhead pal that hid while a bunch of women and kids got shot up. Fuck it, Garret. While we're at it, forget about your family. Let's just cruise around the country saving people."

Garret grabbed the Irishman's collar and pulled him close. "All those bodies in there are on us. None of this would have happened if we didn't come through here."

"But we did, and it's done." The Irishman broke free from his grasp and said, "After you killed that punk today I thought you grew some balls."

"That's why we can't leave them here to die. I'm not a heartless dick like you. I can't be."

"Fine." The Irishman was done arguing. He turned to Maps in passing and said, "I just want to go on record that this is a shit idea."

Maps shrugged. The Irishman kicked up dirt and walked back into camp to get some sleep. Garret lay down in the truck. The day's events replayed in his mind as he drifted off. Maps stood watch.
