Jakia stood off to the side of the entrance as she impatiently waited. The New Years Eve air tortured her smooth caramel legs, and the thin fabric of her dress wasn’t insulating. She folded her arms across her chest, and let out an exaggerated sigh as a fog exited her pink lips. She was already cleared to enter Club Zenith without questioning, but doll faced Keyvette hit a barricade. The muscular bouncer demanded to see identification.
Keyvette shook her head and stomped pass him once he returned the card. After they paid that front counter, Jakia looked at Keyvette and burst out into laughter. “Bitch, you gone be carded all of your life. With yo jailbait looking ass!” She held her fist to her mouth and giggled as she backed through a curtain into the club.
Keyvette offered a sarcastic grin. “That’s ok, cause when I’m 30 looking 20, yo busted ass will look 40,” she said as they stepped inside. They both had to pause and let the image in front of them sink in. They knew that the place was going to be packed, but the sight before them was ridiculous. There wasn’t a natural path through the crowd. Everyone was bundled up breaching personal space and comfort zones. This type of scene was not Keyvette’s style, but Jakia’s eyes nearly popped.
“Come on girl, let’s hit the dance floor!” Jakia said as she grabbed Keyvette’s hand and pulled her along like a kite. They navigated carefully, like soldiers crossing minefields, or special agents crawling through red security beams. Everywhere Keyvette looked there was someone in front of her, spilling a drink on her suede knee-high boots, bumping into her, or some stupid chick all in the way while she conned a guy at the bar for patron shots.
Keyvette was easily overlooked in the crowd as her small frame was tugged. Jakia didn’t stop pulling her until they made it to the center of the floor. Jakia turned to her and smiled as she let go of her and started slow dancing to Beyonce’s ‘Drunk in Love’. She closed her eyes, rocked her hips, and tilted her head back as the tunes stimulated her body. When she opened her eyes she saw Keyvette staring right at her with an uncomfortable look painted on her face.
“What’s wrong?” Jakia asked as she leaned over. She still rocked to the music as she waited for an answer. “If you scared, call that reverend…” Jakia recited with a smile as she continued to rock her hips.
Keyvette folded her arms and looked around briefly. The black lights made her dark skin look brilliant, but her expression was dull. “You know I can’t dance unless I’m drunk… let’s go get a drink,” she said as she nodded towards the bar.
Jakia wanted to have a little fun with her first; she wanted to see how mad she could get her before she snapped and stormed off. “Come on, after this song go off…” Jakia said as she grabbed Keyvette’s hands and continued dancing.
