Chapter 10
Junia
Junia would have appreciated an attack. Perhaps even a hail for help to come through the speaker. Anything to break this tense monotony. It would also keep her from wondering what in the galaxy she was doing here with Reave.
Although Junia would have loved to be angry at him for getting her to break every rule in the book, she couldnât. The truth is that she had followed him all on her own. Grimes, she had even hacked Alioth property? What was wrong with her? Had she really fallen for that tall tale he had fed her?
Itâs no tall tale for him, Junia thought as she saw him sitting there. His eyes were groggy with sleep, though he seemed to be fighting it. He kept the communicator between his hands. It was almost sad seeing him, clutching that thing as if holding it would force someone to speak through it.
Why am I really doing this? Junia asked herself again. It was the same question that had rattled her mind all throughout the day. She grudgingly accepted that besides being really annoying he was a bit⦠charming. It wasnât the kind of fleeting charm sheâd seen many guys turn on when they wanted to get a girl, and then turned off once they had obtained the object of their affection.
Reave, despite his faults, had a genuine charm to him. It was real, and maybe thatâs why it was also so dangerous. She needed to be careful. Remember. He only wants to use you. As soon as he gets what he wants, heâll forget you even exist.

Hours later, the moonâs glow poured through the high window. It spilled through the room, basking Reaveâs face in a pale blue hue. He had finally given way to exhaustion and fallen asleep. The communicator remained firmly clutched in his hands.
An hour passed. Thoughts of her mother flooded her mind. She saw her running through the snowy fields with her long hair flowing freely behind her. Sitting in the fireplace, eating the Lenistil soup. As a child she had complained that it was too salty. Now she wished she could at least taste her motherâs homemade food once more. What she would give to hear the thunder that lit up the sky every night sky. With her eyes closed, she almost felt the warm glow from the old fireplace. She saw herself there, all grown up with her mother at her side. Laughing as they sat by the ancient wooden table. It had been simple, but it had been home. If only she could travel back in time, when there was still an inkling of happiness in her lifeâ¦
She forced her eyes open. She couldnât possibly indulge in this daydreaming. Her soul was broken, shattered beyond repair. There was no use in dreaming of what could no longer be.
Speaking of daydreams, it was time that Reave faced the truth too. There was no grand conspiracy. No veil to remove.
âReave,â she said, tapping his shoulder.
âHuh,â he said groggily.
