‘It’s only a week until Midsummer’s Day. I think we should have a party to celebrate,’ Mary announced. ‘We can gather in the churchyard and crown a Summer Queen. Perhaps even have a bonfire in the evening.’

The two women were walking arm in arm along the clifftop path, enjoying the warm sunshine. Jack and Morna walked ahead in the company of five other small children. Their task was to gather five unique objects each and keep them safe in their smock pockets.

Only a week! With all her time spent organising the school, Effie hadn’t been keeping track of the days. The year had gone so quickly and for the first time she was not spending her days anticipating Lachlan’s return. She had even slipped a letter from Walter into her apron pocket and forgotten about it for two days. It was exactly as it should be, but it did mean she hadn’t spoken much to Morna about her father’s arrival. At bedtime she would have to make sure to remind the child. Six months was much longer for her than for an adult.

A bonfire sounded fun but not on that day when Effie and Morna had other arrangements.

‘Isn’t that rather pagan?’ she asked uncertainly. She had no objection in that regard herself but Mary was a vicar’s daughter after all.

Sure enough, Mary looked anxious. ‘I don’t know. Perhaps I should ask my father for advice.’

Effie took her hand. ‘Why not suggest the children gather flowers in the afternoon and leave it at that? We could have a picnic and play games in the churchyard. If they enjoy it we can do more the year after.’

‘That’s a good idea. So much better than mine. I’m so pleased you’re helping me with everything,’ Mary said, hugging Effie. Effie hugged her back. It was good to have a friend, and even better to have one who listened to her ideas without asking too many questions.
