CHAPTER 10
Antonio showed up moments later. He gently popped a neck brace on Chloe, loaded her onto a gurney and put her in his ambulance, with Oblix squashed beside the bed in the back.
Prue banged on the floor from upstairs a couple of times and shouted at us to keep it down. She finally made an appearance, took in the destruction in my living room, and, furious to have missed everything, yelled at everyone, stole Chloeâs car keys and drove herself to the hospital to make sure she was okay.
I fielded questions from Aunt Marche and Backman about the other attempts on my life, while Conrad stood in the corner, muttering incomprehensible military-speak into his phone, his eyes following me restlessly.
The room cleared slowly. Two silent men in overalls and safety goggles marched in, picked up the body of Billy the Eel, and left without a word. Aunt Marche slipped a Grecian cameo necklace around my neck, told me to behave, warded my door and window, and disappeared back upstairs with Backman and Marigold. Damon settled into my couch with the remote. He was babysitting for me again tonight.
I ducked back into my bedroom and ruffled Dexterâs curls gently one more time. He was sleeping soundly. Gorâgamuth eyed me scornfully, clearly offended that I felt the need to check on my son when he was doing such a good job guarding him.
Conrad was by the door when I emerged; he took my hand. âAre you sure you still want to go ahead with tonight?â
We were supposed to go to dinner together before heading to the Senatorâs fundraiser. Weâd already canceled two dates, and I didnât want to cancel a third. I thought the difficult thing about dating Conrad would be keeping Mavka under wraps, not having constant attempts on my life.
I nodded, biting my lip. âIt might be safer for everyone at this stage if I was somewhere else,â I muttered. âI canât believe Chloe was almost murdered because of me.â
He squeezed my hand. âI know how you feel.â
âI bet you do.â Heâd warned me that I might be targeted by his enemies if we were seen together. But this wasnât his fault; it was nothing to do with him. The trouble was, I couldn't pinpoint the exact reason why someone wanted me dead. There were actually too many reasons to choose from.
The reason didnât matter, though. I lifted my chin. âI donât want to hide. Someone is trying to stop me from doing something; I canât let them win. Letâs go to the fundraiser.â
He nodded. âOkay.â For a moment, he looked a little uncertain, just a tiny bit apprehensive. The expression sat on his face oddly; he wasnât used to feeling it. âIâm taking you somewhere for dinner first,â he said. âIf thatâs okay.â
âOh. Yes, absolutely.â Suddenly, I remembered that I was still in my silk robe. âIâll just get into my gown. I hope itâs okay if I wear the same thing to dinner.â I bit my lip. âI might be a tiny bit overdressedâ¦â
âIâm sure no one will mind.
