Chapter 22

Isabella

I can't believe I let him do that to me.

Damn my weakness for this man and his ability to ruin me.

"Are you still with me, Andrea?" Moretti's impatience seeps into his words, but all I can do is nod frantically and fidget in my seat.

This is exactly why I knew getting involved with the older Sinclair would only lead to trouble. If my boss even suspects what happened between us, I'll be shipped off to some secluded island without a second thought.

"Sorry, I didn't get much sleep last night," I lie, preparing myself for yet another fib to appease him.

"Still trying to figure out the camera?" he asks knowingly.

My face remains stoic as I fabricate an excuse about needing to replace it. But Moretti just brushes it off, casually suggesting that I ask my bodyguard for a ride to the "store."

I had promised myself that I would visit Moose at the "store," our code name for the warehouse where we keep our gadgets. My mind drifts to the upcoming yacht meeting and the need for discreet gadgets. Bikinis may be great for seduction, but not so much for concealing weapons.

"I'll make sure to stop by," I assure him, eager to end this conversation before any more of my lies unravel.

"You know, Andrea," he begins, his hand suddenly gentle on mine. "You remind me so much of your mother."

I hold my breath, already anticipating what comes next.

"She was quite the spy," he clarifies with a smirk. Of course, that's all he sees in me—a miniature version of my mother's cunning and skill. It disgusts me sometimes how he tries to mold me into her image.

"Well, hopefully someday you'll become half the woman she was," he finishes with a condescending pat on my hand. But what he really means is half the spy she was.

As if reading my thoughts, he reminds me to stay focused on the mission and not get distracted by emotions.

But the truth is, I've lost sight of what the real prize is in all of this.

I plaster on a fake smile and kiss his cheek before quickly making my escape. As soon as I'm back in my car, I let out a sigh of relief. It's exhausting playing this game with Moretti—always having to watch my every move and word. But it's necessary for my own safety. As I drive away, his words continue to echo in my mind.

"Stay safe, Andrea." If only it were that simple.

It's only been a few days since I last saw Vince, but he still lingers in my mind. Despite his busy schedule caring for their ailing father, he's managing to send me a few messages checking in. And Olivia, who I rarely see these days, informs me that he is consumed with finding the best care for their father. I can't fault him for it, but my constant yearning to be near him is becoming harder to suppress.

I'm toying with the idea of putting a tracker on him, just as Moretti suggested, but deep down, I know it's for selfish reasons.
