She decides to keep the windows open after all, just in case, and wakes at every little sound. She finally falls into a fitful sleep as dawn is stretching over the horizon, and stays in bed past her normal time. When she comes downstairs, Nan is in the kitchen.
âGood morning,â Nan says. âCan I pour you some tea?â
âThat would be lovely, thanks.â Holly sits down and takes the tea gratefully. Her head feels as if itâs stuffed with cotton wool. âWhere is everyone?â
âYour mother is in the library. She got a call about a charity dinner sheâs helping to plan.â
âAnd Jack?â
Nan grins broadly. âEd picked him up. Heâs taking him to lacrosse practice. Jack was totally chuffed.â
Holly sits completely still. The anger that disappeared last night roars back, white hot, and every word, every thought, is acid. What is the matter with him that he canât listen? Even after their talk last night. She tries to tell herself that itâs not all his fault, that sheâs never explicitly forbidden him from playing, but then she thinks of Eden in that hospital bed in Cornwall and her stomach twists. Jack has so much, and heâs throwing it away. And for what? A stupid game.
âDr. Darling?â Nan is hovering over her. âAre you all right? Youâve gone pale.â
âWhere did they go?â
âThe boys? The field is about fifteen minutes away. Itâs walkable, but Ed drove them there.â She rolls her eyes. âDonât worryâheâs an excellent driver. His dad taught him when Ed was ten, mostly to upset our mother. Theyâll be fine.â
âNo, they wonât.â Dimly, Holly realizes her hands are clenching. She makes an enormous effort to unfold them.
âExcuse me?â
âJack has a . . . a condition. Heâs not supposed to be playing sports right now.â
âIâm so sorry,â Nan says, looking horrified. âHe said nothing to me.â
âI want you to give me the address of that field, and then I want you to leave.â Part of her knows sheâs being unreasonable, that itâs not Nanâs fault, that sheâs overreacting because she hasnât had a solid nightâs sleep in weeks and sheâs holding on to hope for Eden by a thread, but the other part doesnât care. She wants Nan gone.
âAre you . . . are you firing me?â
âLuckily itâs not up to her,â Jane says, coming into the kitchen. She still has her reading glasses on. âNan, youâve done nothing wrong. But why donât you go home for the day all the same, with salary. Consider itââshe eyes Hollyââhazard pay.â
Nan nods. âIâm so sorry, Dr. Darling. I didnât mean to cause problems.â
Holly doesnât reply. Nan scribbles a note on the pad by the kitchen phone, rips it off, and leaves it on the table. âHereâs the address of the lacrosse field.â
âIâll see you tomorrow,â Jane says. âEnjoy yourself today.â
Nan scoops up her sweater from the back of the chair and hurries away. Holly waits until she hears the door shut before she rounds on her mother.
âHow dare you,â she seethes. âDo you know what she did?â
âOf course I do.
