Chapter Six

COLT

Somewhere Over Oregon

6:45 p.m.

* * *

WTF, man.

Colt ran a hand through his hair as he peered out the window. He had been in his share of shit. From his days as a SEAL being dropped into some dirt-encrusted hole in the wall, to rehab on his knee when he thought he might never walk again, Colt had been through the wringer.

But this? Stuck up in the air in an oversized tin can when all the lights as far as he could see just blinked out? This was not going to end well.

He thought about the guy he’d arrested, ranting on and on about space weather and armageddon and the power grid. Guess I should have listened instead of cuffing him and hauling him away. Damn it.

When this all settled he would end up on desk duty for sure, pushing papers the rest of his career. Colt half-stood, head bumping the overhead bin, as he scanned the plane. Heather caught his eye and he waved her over.

From the look of barely-concealed terror on her face, he knew the answer to his question without asking, but he plowed ahead anyway. “We’re landing blind, aren’t we?”

She swallowed. “The captain is turning the plane around. He says there’s a runway a little ways back that has lights.”

Colt glanced at his watch. “We’re what, halfway over Oregon?”

Heather nodded. “He thinks it’s somewhere near Eugene.”

“Is it big enough?”

Her eyes darted to the closed flight deck door. Crap. “I don’t know. I really need to go. The passengers are agitated. I need to calm them down.”

Reaching for her arm, he stopped her before she took a step down the aisle. “If you need any help, I’ve done this before.”

She blinked. “You’ve survived an airplane crash?”

He thought back to the injury that cost him his dream job. The sound of crunching metal, the whirling blades of the helicopter as they dug into the concrete. The explosion that somehow spared his life but took others.

Colt shoved the memories back with a hollow smile. “Something like that.”

Heather walked away, her voice soothing as she approached the first occupied row. “Please buckle up and raise your seat backs. The captain will be making an announcement soon.” Repeating the same instructions over and over, Heather walked toward the rear of the plane. Colt listened until he could no longer hear her voice.

With a ragged exhale, he rubbed at his face to wake up. With close to three hundred people on board, Heather and the rest of the cabin crew had their work cut out for them. Even if they landed safely… What the hell would they do then?

The cabin intercom kicked on with the familiar buzz and Colt perked up.

“Good evening everyone, this is your captain, Walter Sloane, speaking. As you may have noticed out your windows, the Pacific Northwest appears to be experiencing a large blackout.”

He paused, whether to prepare himself or clear his throat, the effect was the same. A stillness fell over the cabin.

“As a result of the systemic power loss, we are without radio or satellite.
