The sheriff just stared after Jacko as he left the scene and jogged in the direction of the hospital.

‘Is he always like that?’ asked the sheriff, rubbing a hand across his face.

‘Pretty much. Do you know where Emily lives?’ Mitch kept his question to the point. The sheriff was a man on the edge already. Small towns like this rarely had major crimes happen. When it did, it rocked the whole community.

‘Err, yes, run-down old house on the edge of town. Over that way.’ The sheriff gestured in the general direction of the north end of town. ‘Her dad and sister live there, too. Four-two-nine Ponderosa Avenue. There’s a beat-up old Chevy out front. I’ve called in my deputies, they’ll be here soon. Your assistance would be appreciated if it’s on offer. Not often we get crimes of this nature round these parts.’

‘Definitely. Caleb, you go to the house, speak to the father. Don’t give him too much detail, just say she’s been hurt. No point causing undue worry. Stay until I come over. Keep them at the address until we can both accompany them to the hospital. Under no circumstances…’

‘That bastard comes anywhere near that kid, he’s toast,’ ground out Caleb, his teeth gritting against each other. ‘Might be hard keeping the dad at the house. If it was my kid, I’d want to be at the hospital.’

‘Yes, best he doesn’t see his daughter in that condition again. He’ll find out what’s happened in full later. For now, let’s try and keep things as simple as we can.’

Caleb was hanging on by a thread and needed something physical to do. Protection detail was the right thing for him at this moment in time. He turned sharply, left the alleyway, pulled up the maps system on his cell, and made his way in the direction indicated by the sheriff.

Mitch watched him leave. It had hit Caleb hard. Sure, he’d been attracted to Emily, but he’d been visibly outraged when she’d told Jacko about the attack. His sense of right and wrong ran deep, and Mitch gave him credit where it was due. In his mind, Caleb was turning out to be a good guy.

Next thing on Mitch’s list was calling the boss. Taking out his cell, he hit dial. The number rang all of three times before Gabe answered.

‘Boss, we have a situation…’
