King’s revelation that he was set to make another “delivery” that night stunned Holm, Harris, and me because that meant that there was yet another potential victim still on board the ship at that very moment. After revealing that the girl in question was currently locked in his room back on board the ship and likely still drugged, our first move after ending the interrogation had been to alert someone of her existence.

“They found the girl,” Harris informed us as he walked back to the table where Holm and I were sitting inside Tucker’s.

After finishing up the interrogation, we’d decided to retreat here to get something to eat while we came up with a plan for tonight.

“That’s a relief,” I replied as I set down the menu I’d be perusing through just moments before he returned. “Was she okay?”

“Yes,” Harris replied as he sat down at the small, circular table at the corner of the restaurant. “She was still unconscious when they broke into King’s room on the ship, but alive. Since they aren’t entirely sure what he dosed her with, they can’t be sure what side effects she might still have.”

“King did say that he gave her something that the guy in charge of the site provided him with,” I muttered as I leaned back and crossed my arms across my chest. “I wonder what it could have been that he gave her. It sounds similar to Rohypnol, though maybe some kind of variation.”

“That’s what I was thinking, too,” Holm added as she stroked his chin thoughtfully. “King said that all he had to do was tell her to do something, and she did it, right? Most date rape drugs would have a similar effect. They increase suggestibility and decrease inhibition, so that fits. What struck me as weird was the fact that he apparently walked off the ship with her. Someone who had taken Rohypnol probably wouldn’t be able to stand straight, let alone walk. Someone would have noticed her acting strangely if he tried to just waltz off the ship with her.”

“You sure about that?” I asked skeptically. “King did say that barely anyone was taking her disappearance seriously, and from what the Marquises told us, it doesn’t seem like he was lying about that.” I sighed as I leaned back in my seat. “Maybe someone did notice she was acting strangely and just assumed she was drunk. Or maybe they just didn’t care.”

A morose silence fell over the table as all three of us pondered over everything that had gone wrong following Opal’s disappearance. What happened to her had been preventable, and if any one of the people tasked with finding her had tried just a bit harder, maybe she would still be alive today.

“Alright,” Jenny’s bright, bubbly voice smashed through the tense silence at the table like a sugar-filled wrecking ball. “Officer Harris, I brought you your favorite, roast beef with onion rings, fresh of course, and extra crispy.” She set the large tray of
