Chapter Fifteen

Lorelei

When there was a knock on the adjoining room door, Lorelei tied the belt of the robe and opened it. Wizard stood on the other side holding Styrofoam cups of coffee. The rich aroma immediately attacked her senses, as did Wizard’s presence. There was something about him that made her feel alive.

"Good morning," he said. "I brought coffee."

The butterflies were back in her stomach, too. He looked very handsome this morning in jeans and a deep blue shirt. She could feel the heat rising up her cheeks. "Thank you very much." She took the coffee from him and downed her head.

He followed her back inside the room. "You know, when you’re staying in a hotel, you don't have to make your bed. They have housekeeping staff who come in and clean the room every day. It’s what they get paid for."

She shrugged. "I wanted something to do." She took a drink of her coffee. It was good and had a full, rich flavor. "Will Zeke be okay?" she asked. They had become quite close since the rescue.

"Yes, he'll be fine. He's quite resourceful."

He took a seat in one of the two chairs in the room. She sat opposite him.

"Sometimes, I thought he stayed because of me. I know it sounds crazy. It was just a strange feeling I had. It wasn't that we ever talked. We would've been punished if Nash had caught him saying anything to me. We communicated silently with subtle gestures. As if we had a language all our own."

“It’s possible. Animals do the same thing. They use the senses.”

"He protected me, too. I overheard someone saying I was stupid once. Their words cut me. I started to turn and go the other way when Zeke told them they would regret it if they said anything else bad about me. He told them that in his country, they believed in magic potions that could be used for good or evil and that he would hate if the man got horribly sick because of something he shouldn't have said."

Wizard laughed. "I've been watching him. Sometimes he seems very quiet and unassuming."

"I think that's an act."

"You're right. It is. He fools a lot of people because they don't notice him. I think he'll be able to get into the country quite easily. He'll be able to scout the area and let us know approximately how soldiers work for Rufus. You and I will go in once we have a lay of the land." He hesitated briefly. "You know, you don't have to do this."

"But I want to. I've been in a bubble all my life. I'm finally getting to do something of importance. Besides, it's exciting."

"I don't want you taking any chances."

"I won't. I may not have a formal education, but I'm not stupid."

His forehead wrinkled in thought. "How many books are you reading now?"

"I only read two yesterday. One on travel and one about royalty." She was thoughtful for a moment. "Did you realize as a prince,
