Chapter 26

For the next week the town was agog with the witch trial. Nothing was really known but rumors persisted and expanded hourly. The main charge centered on the witch’s allegedly cursing people and bringing bad luck on them. That, all for money. Many instances of this were quoted widely and repeated, even that Widow Colter was hounded to death by demons the witch set on her. She threw herself out of a high window and died rather than to give in to the evil spawn. According to hearsay, the maid confessed to hiring the witch because of longtime mistreatment by her Mistress.

“It’s rumors making too much of petty complaints and jealousies,” Opal commented, trying to find a perspective.

Master Conti had a different opinion. “I think it more likely that the Dominicans have conjured this great evil up for us so that we’ll be in need of spiritual cleansing by Mother Church.” Opal knew her father had a circle of friends with radical opinions on society and particularly on the church. He ranted on to prove it. “The Church has become the great whore we painted Babylon to be. More interested in money, drink, gluttony and licentious behavior than in saving souls. It uses fire to burn dissent and fire to intimidate people.”

“Surely Father, it’s not that bad.”

“Daughter, I pray to God that it be not, but I dread... that it’s even worse than I fear.”
