Eddy sensed them in his room before he heard them, moving around softly on the linoleum floor.

“Is he asleep?” a gruff voice asked.

“Looks like it,” a more feminine voice replied. “He’s sweet when he’s asleep, isn’t he? Like a big baby.”

Eddy teased his eyes open a fraction, able to make out the shapes of the two Weres who had been standing guard outside the door. He wondered what they were doing in his room and if he should be alarmed. After all, hadn’t there now been two attempts to kill him from two different people?

“All he does is sleep,” the first voice remarked. “Whatever drugs they’re giving him, I need some of that. I haven’t slept like that since I was a pup.”

“Years ago, then?” the second voice joked.

They chuckled, then one Were shushed the other as they turned their attention back to Eddy. He wasn’t sure if they could see his eye was open a little, but judging by their talk and movement, he assumed they couldn’t.

“Has he got any snacks?” the feminine voice stated. Eddy wished he’d learned their names. To him, they were all the same. Even the men Weres were similar to the women.

The gruff voice replied, “Got some fruit. Here.” He threw an apple at the woman. She failed to catch it, and the piece of fruit hit the floor with a wet thud.

“Nice throw,” she admonished.

“Nice catch,” he retorted and threw another piece.

This time, she caught it.

“Can you believe this job?” the feminine voice asked. “All bullshit, if you ask me. Standing outside the glass and monitoring this one. All for what? I could be at one of Jay’s legendary orgies right now, getting my rocks off. Anything’s gotta be better than watching over this worm.”

“Tell me about it,” the gruff voice agreed. “Wouldn’t it be easier to just chomp him up? Bet he’s good for a bit of protein.”

“Nah,” the feminine voice returned. “Too gamey. Not enough fat. He’d hardly be a mouthful. Though, he would be good to ride.”

“You’d fuck that?” the man demanded.

Eddy tensed up.

“Any day of the week,” the woman insisted. She tapped the man’s arm. “Hey, since he’s out so cold, we could take him somewhere safer. Put him in the center of the orgy and let people have their turn on him? Might be a nice gift to the group.”

“Ain’t that how Big Rob lost a toe?” the man asked.

“No, that was from fishing for zombies down by the Galley River. You know, I heard he ended up taking one of those back to his house.”

“A zombo?” the man shot back. “Gross.”

Eddy thought the same thing. He pictured each scene they described, finding his stomach turning at the images. He lay perfectly still, scared to move a muscle, wondering how long they were going to talk among themselves. Surely they could do this out in the hall, couldn’t they? Leave Eddy out of it. Eddy just wanted to sleep and rest and wait until morning so he could ignore them all over again.
