Often a parent’s first instinct when learning of a daughter’s violent boyfriend is to lock the door and keep the family inside. Don’t do it. Seek help from others who have the knowledge and experience to guide you and your daughter to safety. At this point you may feel completely alone and without hope, but the resources are there for you to find.

Whom can you call for information, direction, and comfort? One, you can set up an appointment with your daughter’s guidance counselor. Be sure that the appropriate school authorities are aware of the problem and your suspicions. Two, try making an appointment to talk with counselors at a local shelter for battered women. They’ll be able to help you assess the situation and may recommend other resources. Don’t forget to talk and pray with your pastor or a lay leader who is skilled in counseling.

Among Christians there is a tendency to focus on ways of keeping the family or couple together as opposed to seeking out options of safety for the battered victim. Some adults also view dating violence as nothing more than two kids playfully fighting and are unaware of the risks involved for the victim. If you feel that your church does not have a firm enough grasp on the dynamics of violence against women, then by all means trust your intuition and seek out the assistance of a caring adult who is aware of the many problems facing teens. Your options might include calling the council within your church district and requesting a list of clergy or lay persons that work specifically with these issues.
