Chapter Ten

Riley’s body was tense, but she managed to reach the station without careening the SUV off the road. Streetlamps were clouded by snow flurries. The winds were definitely picking up and it looked like seven at night instead of almost two in the afternoon.

She parked behind the station and went in through the breakroom, where Matthew pored over his notes—printed papers were strewn across the table. Riley could hear Rosita on the phone at the front desk where Nancy usually sat.

“Hey!”

Matthew whirled. “Oh! You scared me. Do you realize that Ryker and this Washburne kid, Dorian, were tailing Lars before he left the island?”

“Months ago?” Riley unzipped her jacket, glad to be warm. “How could I know that?”

“Right.” Matthew stood up. “Want me to make another pot of coffee? I could use a hit of caffeine.”

“Yeah. That would great.” She took her coat off completely and stacked it with her gloves on an end chair. “So. Why were they doing that?”

“I guess Ryker didn’t think Lars should be flirting with his sister.” Matthew shrugged.

Riley crossed her arms and leaned against the counter. “Did Ryker and Dorian ever catch up to Lars?”

“He said that they hadn’t.” Matthew pressed the start button on the old coffeemaker. “What did you learn?”

“Lars stiffed Tessa Barton a few months’ rent when he left.”

“What a loser!”

“Worse is that Tessa had a soft spot for the man. And Kimber said that Emily fancied herself in love with Lars too.”

“I don’t understand why girls go for the guys that suck.” His cheeks were pink with emotion. Was he thinking of the woman he’d almost married?

“Me either,” Riley said. Kimber and Matthew were both bound to Sandpiper Bay. Maybe when this was all over, she could play matchmaker. “Did you ever catch up with Bernie?”

“I swung by the marina on the way back from the Washburnes but they were in full boat storage mode to get the ships and watercraft tied up. Not the right time.”

“Getting answers is rarely a straight line,” she commiserated.

Rosita hurried back to the kitchen. “Oh, is that coffee I smell? Hurray. What did people do before java juice?” She reached for three mugs from the cupboard and passed them out. “The phones are ringing off the hook. Radio too. People are getting scared about the upcoming storm. Wyatt put out a bulletin on the radio, saying it’s going to be a big one. Ice, wind, snow. Catastrophe.”

Riley nodded. “That’s what he told me too. He showed me the sonar machine, which is out of this world. We need to prepare and then hunker down.”

The three stared at the pot as it dripped.

“What else did you discover at Kimber’s?” Matthew asked.

“She’d heard that Lars is dead while working at the bar but not who said it. I didn’t confirm or deny.”

“Sandpiper Bay’s unique brand of communication. A whisper here, a murmur there.” Matthew returned to his chair with his empty mug rather than stare at the machine. “Gossip thrives. Someone must know something.”

“We can add to the board that Wyatt said Lars arrived at ten Friday morning, without a car.
