Chapter 10
A sliver of sunlight peeked in at the top of the window, the cheery beam promising the storm was over. Jack lay still so as not to wake Laurel, who snuggled into him, one arm draped over his chest and her leg looped over his. He smiled to himself, knowing she’d be embarrassed when she woke in such an intimate position. Jack looked forward to another glimpse of her blush.
While he waited for her to wake, he strategized a plan to dig out and find their way back to civilization. They could ride the horse or at least use her to pull them on the sled Laurel used to haul the firewood. Laurel shifted and burrowed her face into his neck and he laughed. She sat, pushing herself up from his chest. The resulting pain was worth watching her face change from sleepy bewilderment to flustered pink underneath a curtain of tangled bedhead.
“Good morning, bright eyes.” Jack grinned at her.
She dropped her gaze and turned her head to the side. “Good morning.” She ineffectively smoothed her messy hair and glanced back at him. “Take that bloody smirk off your face.” She slid from the bed and put several logs on top of the smoldering embers. “Breakfast?” Laurel moved to the kitchen, picking up the soggy table cloth on her way. She wrung it out and draped it over the back of a chair.
Before long, the scent of fresh coffee found his nostrils. He watched her light the stove and set the leftover cornbread inside to heat.
“Cornbread with syrup?” Laurel glanced at him over her shoulder.
His stomach growled in answer and she grinned.
“There’s some beef jerky too and canned peaches.”
“Sounds great.” Jack gingerly pushed himself up. “I think if you help me wrap my ribs nice and tight again, I’ll be able to help a lot more today.”
Laurel raised her brows at him skeptically.
“We can’t sit here waiting for the cabin to fall in on us. We have to do what we can while the sun is shining.”
“I know.” Her tone was less than enthusiastic.
Over breakfast, Jack shared his plan. He dabbed the crumbs of cornbread up with his fork. Laurel wiped a drip of honey from the side of his mouth and he turned to catch her finger in his mouth tasting the sweetness. Their eyes clashed together with electric yearning.
Laurel smiled but then drew away. She touched the silver charm on her neck and then stacked his empty plate on top of hers. She cleared her throat. “We’re a little over twenty miles from the compound. Normally, we could make that trip in one day with good weather, but in this snow? No way.”
“True. So today, we’ll just dig out an emergency escape route through the front and then one for your horse behind the barn. Maybe the sun will help and melt some of the snow off.” Jack stood and stretched the best he could, wincing as his ribs complained. “We’ll be able to assess the situation better once we get outside.
