Three weeks later, Will and Lexie settled into a modest apartment not far from Angela and Kevin’s trendy Beacon Hill neighborhood. They had returned to their former jobs and put the events at Altmover Manor behind them.

“I have a late meeting this evening,” Will told her before shoving a slice of toast in his mouth.

“That was fast. It’s not even your third day back.” She adjusted his crooked tie. “Don’t let Forrester and Whitney work you to death like they did last time.”

“I don’t have much choice, do I? We need the money.” The insurance company was dragging its feet with the settlement, and the new apartment and furnishings had cleaned out what savings they had left. His eyes devoured her snug green dress. “You got another client meeting today?”

“Yep.” She went to the coffeemaker.

Will lifted his mug to his lips. “Fifth one this week, right?”

“Kevin has been referring new people to me. Every time Mother says I told you so about the house, Kevin sends another lawyer, housewife, or golf buddy my way. I think he’s making up for Angela’s hounding.”

“She’ll never let us forget about it, I’m sure.” He held his cup out to her and scowled. “What is this?”

“The coffee and chicory you wanted.”

“Don’t buy me this stuff anymore. It’s too strong.”

“No problem.” Lexie grinned while lifting her coffee to her lips.

He took his mug to the sink. “Why are you smirking?”

She put her drink down. “When we lived at Altmover Manor, you changed. You got a sudden love of coffee, were saying some strange things, and a few times in bed, you ...”

His lips smashed together, and redness tinged his cheeks. “What?”

Should she tell him her suspicions? “You were playful ... in the bedroom. Maybe it was the house.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Will said, his voice peppered with irritation. “I didn’t change. I’m always playful in bed.”

Magnus dropped in, wearing his usual red vest, long black coat, and ascot tie. “You still haven’t told him it was me? Lexie, you should be honest with your future husband.”

She glared at Magnus. “I guess I’m still coming to terms with everything we went through.”

“That makes two of us.” Will turned away from the sink.

Magnus motioned to the hallway. “Someone is at the front door.”

A light chirping sound rolled around the kitchen.

“Who’s that at this hour?” Will checked the microwave clock. “It’s not even eight.”

“I’ll get it.” Lexie rushed to the kitchen door. “You eat your breakfast.”

“You burnt the eggs again,” Will called as she exited the kitchen.

Lexie hurried past the sparse furniture and bare white walls in the living room, cringing at the reminder of all they had lost in the fire.

She opened the front door, a tall gentleman holding a black chauffeur’s hat under his right arm greeted her. His short gray-tipped hair added a coldness to his face. The bulge of his black suit accentuated his thick, muscular body.

“Lexie Arden?”

Lexie put her hand on the door. “Yes?”

The man held out a white envelope.
