My eyes fluttered open allowing the light to enter. Stabbing pain erupted in my head as I had the worst hangover I’d had in a long time. Reaching for the bottle of Advil, I quickly downed several with a gulp of water. I’d fallen asleep wearing the clothes I’d had on last night. My top was still sticky from the vomit. I whipped it over my head and tossed it into the clothes basket.

After taking a long shower, I felt better. I swathed a huge blue towel around my wet hair and stepped from the bathroom.

Hearing the doorbell rang with insistence, I wrapped a plush pink robe around myself.

“Hold on, I’m coming!” I wondered who the hell it could be at this early hour on a Saturday morning. Maybe it was a delivery driver with the wrong address. My neighbor was constantly ordering packages on a daily basis. Seeing as she was unemployed, I wondered how she was possibly able to afford all those large seemingly heavy packages.

Not that it was any of my business.

I unlatched the door from the frame and instantly found myself face to face with a red faced Damien.

“What the hell are you doing here?” I demanded with my hands on my hips.

“Nice greeting. You talk to all your boyfriends like that?” He pushed past me into the house.

“Again, I’m asking you. Why are you here? Why is your face so red?”

He rubbed the back of his neck. “I ran up the hill.”

“Why?” I was genuinely puzzled. I hadn’t seen him in months and now here he was even after I’d told him it was over.

“I’ve been running, you know, working out. You remember what a workout is, don’t you? Or have you been too busy fucking Dirk or whatever his name is.”

I glanced at him to see that he was indeed wearing a pair of dark blue sweatpants and a t-shirt.

Before I could utter a word, he strolled over to the kitchen and pulled a bottle of water from the refrigerator. He downed several swallows before looking back at me. “You look like shit. Do you have the flu?”

“Thanks,” I said dryly. “You still didn’t answer me. Why are you here?”

“I was just in the neighborhood on my run and thought I’d stop by. Just paying my old friend a visit.” He grinned at me still looking handsome even when sweaty.

“I’d hardly call us ‘old friends’, Damien. I’m your ex-girlfriend, or mistress I suppose would’ve been a better word for me. I told you before I didn’t want you here. Now please leave.”

He smirked at me then finished his water. Damien then took the water bottle and very deliberately let it hang over the recycle bin several moments before dropping it inside. “Thank you for the water,” he said before turning to leave.

“Please don’t come back.” I whispered incredulous that he simply came by for a drink of water. There were only a million other places he could’ve done that, but I suppose that was the point.
