Chapter Seven

“You what?” Mrs. Burdge gasped and clutched her chest, fixing her accusing gaze on me.

I froze like a deer in the headlights and stared, bewildered, at Rhys. What the hell was he doing? I had no words.

He was looking at me as if he was trying to telecommunicate a message to me. I wasn’t receiving it, apparently, because I could not have been more confused by what was happening. Was that why he’d wanted to talk to me at dinner?

“This is ridiculous.” She was seething. “You’re making a fool of me.”

“That’s not my intention,” he said calmly.

I found my voice. “I, uh, hadn’t realized we’d come to an actual decision on you buying the land, Rhys.”

“I thought we’d iron out the details over dinner tonight.”

Oh, he is smooth as caramel.

“What possible use would you have for twenty acres, Rhys?” Mrs. Burdge was frowning as she studied him.

“I’m a contractor; there are a million things I could do with this land.” He continued speaking and refused to drop my gaze. “I’ve always loved it here. I used to ride my bike on that hill over there, and I did my calculus homework under those great oaks.”

I stood staring at him, trying to wrap my head around the turn of events. “Yeah, but someone told me it would be a good investment to just sit on the land too,” I added.

He didn’t say anything, but his full lips curved in a knowing smile.

“I’m sure you understand why this has thrown me for a loop,” Mrs. Burdge interjected while watching us. “I’ve worked so hard on this deal with the Carmichaels.”

Rhys gave a placating smile. “If Cory sells, you would still get the deal; don’t worry.”

Did he actually want the place, or was he just trying to stall the sale? The cynical side of me whispered that he probably only wanted the land all along. He wasn’t actually pining for you. He wanted a good deal on the real estate. Why was that so much easier to believe?

“It’s very unorthodox,” Mrs. Burdge murmured, but she seemed less angry. Perhaps the idea that either way she’d get her commission was calming her. “I’m a little miffed you two kept me in the dark.”

I didn’t say anything.

“Is this a done deal?” she inquired. “Is there any point in the Carmichaels making a counter offer?”

Rhys didn’t look at me; he answered her instead. “How about I call you tomorrow? If Cory and I come to an agreement tonight, then we’ll know better how to proceed.”

Mrs. Burdge frowned. “Don’t leave me hanging. If you’re blowing smoke up my ass, Rhys, you’ll regret it.”

He blew out a long, heavy breath. “Of that, I have no doubt.”

Mrs. Burdge shot a sympathetic glance toward the Carmichaels. “I guess I better tell them what’s going on.” She graced us with one last scowl and headed for the older couple. That was when I made my hurried exit toward my vehicle, and Rhys followed me. I avoided looking toward the Carmichaels, feeling guilty.
