That was a close call , I think to myself as I quickly change into my bathing suit in one of the resort’s changing rooms. Skylar could have really ruined things between Avery and me. I glance at myself in the mirror before leaving the changing room. The reflection staring back at me is a mix of conflicting emotions. The crisp Hawaiian sunlight filters through the palm leaves outside, casting a warm glow on my face, highlighting the faint flush from the recent encounter with Skylar.

I barely remember meeting her. I think it might have been just one night at the bar, someone I kissed once before calling it a night. She really did mean nothing to me, I hope that Avery knows that. Even if our relationship is just fake.

Stepping back out, I see the Thompson family waiting for me. I catch Avery’s eye and my heart does a little flip, thinking about what it was like to kiss her when I quickly covered up the situation. Her lips were so soft and inviting, a sensation that lingered on mine even after our lips parted. It was a deceptive move, calculated to convince Avery’s family that Skylar was nobody. Yet, in that brief moment of pretense, something unexpected happened.

The resort’s lighting lights up Avery's face, accentuating the spark in her eyes. As our lips met, a subtle electricity passed between us, sparking a connection beyond the realms of our orchestrated relationship. The kiss transcended the boundaries of our fake romance, leaving me momentarily lost in the possibility of something real. Now, as we prepare for more family activities under the Hawaiian sun, I find myself contemplating the complexity of our charade and the uncharted territory it might be leading us into.

Polly clearly can't contain her excitement. “Jet skiing, here we come! This is going to be epic!”

John adds, “I heard the waters here are perfect for jet skiing. Can't wait to hit the waves.”

Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, share a fond smile. Mrs. Thompson remarks, “This vacation is turning out to be just what we needed. Fun in the sun with the family.”

“Yeah, it's been great so far,” Avery notes.

As they approach the jet ski station, I trail behind, taking in the lively chatter. Polly turns to me as her father steps up to talk to the clerk,

“You ready for some jet skiing, Austin?” she asks.

I grin. “Absolutely. Wouldn't miss it for the world.”

The resort clerk, a friendly and sun-kissed individual, comes out from behind the desk, holding a stack of jet ski keys.

“Good afternoon, Thompsons! I hope you're enjoying your stay so far,” the clerk says cheerfully. “Here are your keys.” With a flourish, the clerk hands out five keys with a stretchy band attached to a wrist strap to each family member.

“Now, before you head off, let me share some important safety precautions for your jet skiing adventure,” the clerk continues. The atmosphere shifts from casual check-in to a more focused briefing.

“Firstly, always wear your life jackets, safety first!” The clerk holds up a bright orange life jacket as a visual reminder.
