Their comfortable atmosphere extended through dinner. Sabrina earned high praise in the form of clean plates and requests for seconds of the beef medallions and baby carrots she used to round out the meal. Afterward, Collin suggested he clean up the kitchen while she gave the girls their baths.

The girls were tucked into bed ready to listen to him read to them when the phone rang. He’d brought one of the remotes from the living room so they could catch the call right away.

Sabrina watched from the doorway and whether it was exhaustion or the relief and joy that the girls were getting this contact with the person they loved and needed most in the world, she unashamedly let the tears course down her cheeks. She saw that even Collin had to blink several times when toward the end of their conversation, they scrambled from under the covers to recite their prayers. Sabrina couldn’t take anymore and went to get tissues and then get out of earshot.

Several minutes later, Collin joined her.

“Would you like a glass of wine or brandy?” he asked.

“Nothing for me, thanks. I don’t think I’ll have any trouble sleeping after I turn in.”

“The kids are already asleep,” he said. “As soon as they blew kisses to Cassie, and I disconnected, they were out.”

Sabrina sighed her relief, but added, “She timed this perfectly. I was at my wit’s end trying to reassure and entertain them.”

“Cass sends her love and thanks you again.”

“You didn’t tell her that I was upset and anxious, did you?”

“Absolutely not. It wouldn’t be fair to either of you.” He sat down on the opposite side of the couch. “She’s had a tough time of it, too. There’s been rough weather—snow already—and she had no heat in her quarters until just awhile ago.”

“Awful.”

“She said she should have her e-mail account set up by tomorrow and should be able to call twice a week and e-mail every day. I’ll put the laptop I use here in the kitchen on the bar, so you can download whenever you want and the girls can sit with you and participate.”

Shifting to sit sideways and tucking her feet beside her, Sabrina hugged a pillow to her. “Thank you. That will be fun. I’ve never done chat-room type stuff, but I can see where it would be helpful for all of us. Don’t you know letting the girls have a go at the keyboard and sending that on as a message to her would be hysterical?”

Collin smiled. “Knowing Gena, she can type better than she can speak.”

More softly she continued, “Thank you for coming home early tonight, too.”

“I’m glad I could. I’ll do it every day that I’m able.”

“That’s not necessary. That’s why I’m here.”

“Originally. But things change.”

Sabrina had come through the dinner preparations cleaner than any of them and her white tunic top and slim jeans and socks looked just as fresh as when she’d put them on this morning. The only change was that she’d released her ponytail and brushed her hair to fall in a glossy cape around her shoulders—and that she was visibly tired.
