CHAPTER FIFTEEN

“Joseph, Nathan, and Kiel are coming to speak as fellow Native Americans, if necessary,” said Luke. “Lucy, Sniff, Claire, and King are coming as the animal experts.”

“That’s awesome, brother,” said Frank.

“One more person is coming that you need to be ready for,” said Luke. He could feel Frank frowning on the other end of the phone, waiting for the reveal. “Grandpa.”

“Grandpa? Luke, he’s in his nineties. How in the hell are we supposed to get him up here to see what’s happening?”

“I don’t know. All I know is that he insisted on coming.”

“Alright, we’ll wait for them to arrive here at the hotel. We’ll make sure all of our rooms are on the same floor. I’ll keep you up to date.” He hung up with his cousin and turned to the people around the room. “We’ve got help coming, big help. Right now, we need to find out who in the hell is mining illegally up there.”

“I know,” said Brennan, staring at his phone as he walked toward them. “Samuel Pritchett. His father worked the mines for years before they shut down. He was so distraught, he ended up drinking himself to death. Samuel went on to build a fortune in mortgage lending until the collapse happened a few years back. His company was found guilty of irresponsible lending and lost millions of dollars, forcing them into bankruptcy. About five years ago, he resurfaced. He started buying real estate around the area, including several small farms and homesteads just below the mountain.”

“He was clearing the path,” whispered Lindsay. “He’s buying land to be sure that he owns everything up the mountain. Does he own the mine?”

“No,” said Brennan, shaking his head. “The mine is currently owned by the state. When it closed, it was in foreclosure, and the state took over, thinking it might one day make it a museum. Problem is the state doesn’t have the funds to make it safe enough for people to visit.”

“So, someone at the state level may be in on this?” asked Duncan.

“Maybe. Or maybe Pritchett just took matters into his own hands. All I know is that he’s making a move for that mine, which most likely means he’s found something or seen something that makes him believe it’s worth it.”

“We need to figure out what’s in that mine,” said Bron. “I say a couple of us go up there and get down into that shaft. If we can figure out exactly what they’re doing, we can provide evidence at this hearing.”

“I don’t know,” said Brennan, frowning at the big man. “It’s really dangerous. That mine could collapse at any time.”

“I know the risks, brother. Somebody has to do this, and it might as well be us,” Bron said, staring at the group.

“He’s right,” said Lindsay softly. “I think we have to do this.”

“Bron? You, Aiden, and Parker go,” said Frank. “I’ll stay with Duncan, Lindsay, Remy, and Brennan to see what we can find here. Once the rest of the team gets here, we’ll dig in further.
