CHAPTER FIFTEEN

You could have knocked the entire compound over with a feather when Skull got off his bike, the woman on the back already wrapped around his fingers. Leightyn smiled at Dom, then ran toward her friend, hugging her.

“I’m so glad you’re alright, Avery.”

“Me, too. And thank you for sending help, but especially for sending Skull,” she grinned. “He’s unbelievable, Leightyn.”

“Daddy!” yelled the two voices running toward them. Avery looked at the two little boys and wanted to cry. They were so adorable running to their dad.

“There are my big boys. Did you miss me?” They both nodded, hugging their father. “Matt, Kev, I want you to meet someone very special to me. This is Avery O’Connor. Avery, these are my sons, Matt and Kevin.” Avery knelt down so that she could be at their level and smiled.

“Well, let me look at these handsome little men. My goodness, you two are something else. You look a little like your daddy, but I’m going to bet you look a lot like your beautiful momma, don’t you.” Both boys nodded, their hair flopping in their eyes.

“Do you like baseball?” asked Matt.

“I love baseball!” she exclaimed, clapping her hands. Skull grinned at the faces of his sons, a tear coming to his eye. “I have a secret that not even my friend, Leightyn, knows.”

“I can keep a secret,” exclaimed Kevin.

“Cannot,” scoffed Matt.

“I’m going to trust that you can both keep a secret,” she smiled. “My grandfather was a famous baseball player for the Chicago Cubs.”

“Whoa, that’s cool!” said Matt.

“Yep. His name was Kelly O’Connor, but everyone called him Irish.”

“Irish?” frowned Matt. “But that’s not a name of a person.”

“I agree,” said Avery, nodding enthusiastically. “But everyone called him that because he was so proud of his Irish heritage. Every year, he would go to the Chicago River and watch them turn it green for St. Patrick’s Day.”

“Dad! I want to watch the river turn green,” said Kevin.

“Well, then, we’ll have to make Avery take us, won’t we?” he smiled.

“Yea! Will you, Avery? Will you?” they screamed.

“I would be honored,” she laughed.

The crowd of people around them were all smiling, some with tears in their eyes, although Avery wasn’t certain why. A tiny white-haired woman came toward her, holding out her hands.

“Well, now,” she smiled, “this is more like it. When is it happenin’, Skull?”

“Mama Irene, we’ve known one another less than a day. Maybe give us some time to get used to one another.”

“You and Dom got one month. If you don’t give me a date by then, I’ll plan the weddin’ myself. Avery, it’s lovely to meet you, darlin’. You’re gonna fit right in here. You need anything, you come find me. They call me Irene, Mama Irene, or Mama. No ma’am’s, no Mrs. Got it.”

“Got it,” smiled Avery. She turned to Skull, who pulled her in for a hug. “I like it here.”

“I like having you here,” he whispered.

“Uh, not to interrupt this beautiful love fest,” said Dom, “but I’d damn sure like to speak to Avery, so we can figure out what’s going on.
