Hidden beneath pretty Deák Ferenc tér is the fascinating Millennium Underground Museum, dedicated to the city’s underground metro line, the Metro 1. Officially called the Millennium Underground Railway, this subterranean network is the world’s second-oldest underground railway and it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. The museum – atmospherically located in one of the metro’s disused subterranean train stations and tunnels – celebrates the history of underground transport using photos and models; there are also a number of old metro carriages on display. The metro is still in service today and runs from under Andrássy út to City Park.
