Dawn chased us into South Dakota. I tapped the coffee thermos sixty minutes out from landing. It was either too soon or the coffee flowed straight to my bladder, because after landing and parking the Navajo at the gas pumps I had to beat a hasty path across the ramp to the fixed base operations office. Pidge and Andy followed suit.

After emptying my tank, I filled the Navajo’s tanks using an Essex County Air Service credit card. There would be a reckoning with Earl. Pidge belatedly confessed that although the airplane wasn’t booked for today, the Navajo had a charter scheduled tomorrow, and we had nothing available as backup.

“You’re telling me this now?”

She gave me an impish smile. “If I told you before, we wouldn’t have taken it. See how it all works out?”

“Works out? Now I have to call Rosemary II after we land in Montana and confess to the theft of Earl’s airplane and beg her to see what she could do with the schedule.”

“That’s what I mean,” Pidge curled up again in her seat, “you’ll work it out.”

We broke the bond with Aberdeen runway 31 a little before seven a.m., as the sun did the same with the eastern horizon.

Two hours later we landed at Sioux Valley Municipal Airport.

Andy got the answer to one question as we taxied to a tiedown spot on the ramp.

“Is that…?”

“It is,” I said.

We both stared at the gleaming Falcon 20 jet sitting on the ramp.
