“Look at this!” I held my phone up for Andy to see.

“Hang on.” She focused on driving but pulled a plastic Ziploc bag from the console between the seats. “Take the wheel for a sec.”

I reached over and began steering. This part of Paradise Road ran straight as a steel ruler.

Andy tugged her gloves off and carefully dropped them into the bag. She secured the zip closure and put the bag in her coat pocket.

“I got it.” She took the wheel again.

“That’s a really good idea.” I gestured at her pocket and held up the phone again. “Look at this.”

“I’m driving, Will. Just tell me what it says.”

“Common household chemicals used to make plastic explosives. This is some kind of recipe.”

She glanced at the screen but didn’t comment.

“You need to call someone. The FBI. ATF. Somebody.”

“And tell them what?”

“What do you mean? This is damning!”

“Every survivalist and white supremacist nutball in the country downloads that crap. Most of it is bogus. Mix it up and you get a smelly paste that removes mildew from your shower.”

“C’mon, Dee! You’re not dismissing this—really?”

“No,” she said firmly, “Of course I’m not. What else was on there?”

I read them off.

“Survivalist site. Learn to process expired food after the apocalypse. Yuk. A white nation site. Something about cleaning supplies—which I’m guessing has more to do with chemicals for making bombs. Um. Amazon. A couple more graphic novels, I think. This kid really ought to delete his browser history.”

“Let’s be glad he didn’t. Aside from making explosives, I’m not hearing anything surprising here, based on what you told me about Lane’s research. We know the father is a racist, a Nazi sympathizer, a white supremacist. Lane may be right about the kid growing into it.”

“Okay. So you do take it seriously.”

“I never said I didn’t. Why do you think I will get those gloves tested? Even if it’s a bogus formula, the intent is not. And if he’s progressed to the point of making explosives, it might show up as residue. I touched the door knob and parts of the banister.”

Andy drove, thinking.

“I wonder if Greg LeMore would mind taking a look at this list…” The Milwaukee PD detective had a nerdy side and had recently applied it to help Andy on a case.

“And how do you explain where you got the list?”

“Send me those photos. Explaining them is not my biggest concern.”
