Beginning about mid-day, Saul began looking for a campsite. Each time they came across a clearing or meadow, he would stop and look about, always muttering something like, âNope, not yetâ or ânot hereâ. Marcus had no idea what his grandfather was looking for and could do nothing but nod, and move on. They stopped for a lunch of cold piglet, managing to eat it all. A short time later they burst from the woods into a wide, open field, approximately rectangular, about five-hand paces on a side. âYes! Perfect! This is just what we need!â Saul went to the middle of the field and shed his pack with a welcome sigh. The field was relatively flat, with a small stream trickling down one side close to the tree line. At his grandfatherâs command, Marcus went in search of more game. âLook for something larger, if you can, Marcus. Enough for today and tomorrow as well.â
It took Marcus some time to find, stalk and slay a small deer. He placed it over his shoulders and made his way back to camp. Saul told him to dress it for cooking. âJust follow the same steps I showed you for the piglet.â Marcus did his best. It wasnât very neat, especially the skinning part. But his grandfather seemed satisfied and instructed him to gather wood for cooking their food.
âAnd we will need rocks to build a flame pit,â Saul shouted after him.
A short time later Marcus had retrieved a hand and two rocks, about two-hands in diameter, and dumped them near the place his grandfather had pitched the tents. He had also pulled together a sizeable pile of dry branches. They were plentiful in the forest surrounding the glade. Again, his grandfather had foraged for plant edibles. He had found a sizeable quantity of bulbs, stems and flowers still attached. These Marcus recognized, but again, left his grandfather to boast of his success. Saul pointed to the tubers. âI think you will like these a bit better than the pie plants we had last night. Pie plants are edible, but these... much better!â
Saul quartered the deer, wrapping three of the pieces in leaves, as he had done the left-over piglet. Without being asked, Marcus had found green branches and fashioned a spit over the burn-pit. Once the flame had burned down, a deer hind-quarter was placed on the spit and the bulbs placed in the pot. The coals were hot, the water boiled, and the deer cooked quickly. Saul turned the spit often to make sure the venison was thoroughly and evenly done. At last, they sat down cross-legged before the dying coals to enjoy their meal. Marcus took the pot and their plates to the stream for cleaning. When he returned, his grandfather pointed to the ground next to him. âSit. Now we talk.â
