It was starting to rain.

For Jens Holden, it was just the icing on what had been the shittiest day of his life. He stood on the corner, hands in pockets to protect him against the bracing wind, and looked down the street. The house - soon to be just his rather than his and Amy’s - at his back. A place full of memories, some cherished, others tainted. He checked his watch and shifted his weight from one foot to the other.

Across the street, Mrs Parsons was coming back from taking her spaniel, Giggles, for its nightly shit. As usual, Jens noted that she carried no bag, meaning she had let the animal do its business where it wanted again. Likely on the pavement or on a grass verge. She looked across the street, purple tracksuit garish even in the artificial light of the streetlamps. He nodded, she scowled and tugged the mutt by the lead, disturbing it mid-urination on Frank Allen’s fence. Jens wondered if the old bitch knew how much her and her dog were hated in the community, how many people were sick of her letting it shit where it wanted or keep the neighbourhood awake all night with its constant yapping.

He watched her drag the animal further down the street towards her home, then checked his watch. He was considering calling the taxi company again when he saw the headlights turn onto the street and roll towards him. He waited for it to pull up alongside him and opened the passenger side door.

“Am I okay to ride up front?”

The driver was a big man, his immense stomach pressing against the material of his polo shirt. His arms were tanned and covered with green tattoos which had merged into indistinguishable shapes with the passage of time. He had no neck to speak of, his face bulging into a flabby neck. A greasy and indistinct tangle of brown hair sat on his head, and his eyes were small and piggish. “Absolutely my friend, no problem at all.”

Jens climbed in, struggling to get his knees in a comfortable position.

“You can move the seat back if you like. You’re a big man, eh?” The driver said, flashing a crooked grin.

“Its fine,” Jens grunted as he somehow folded himself into the car and closed the door. At a shade under six feet five inches tall, he was well accustomed to uncomfortable car journeys. The interior of the taxi smelled of pine air freshener, overpoweringly so. As uncomfortable as he was with his knees pressed against the dash, he shifted position and cracked the window.

“You sure you don’t want to push that seat back? You’re a tall guy.”

“It’s fine, really. This isn’t a long journey.”

“No problem, pal. Where would you like to go?”

Jens hesitated, for a moment, unsure if he was just making things worse. “23 Maple Avenue.” He said, knowing that if he didn’t at least try then he wouldn’t be able to sleep and would just lay awake whishing he had gone through with it.
