If the lap occurs in the middle of a piece, you can still use the fence. Simply make a series of shallow cuts, flipping the piece end for end, until its face rides against the fence and the recess is deep enough.

Actually, this section is mostly about using the band saw to cut tenons; band saws just aren't very good at cutting mortises. The tool for mortising is the plunge router. I've included plans for my mortising jig on the next page. Generally, I'll rout the mortises first, and then cut tenons on the band saw to match.
